بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ
Wailul lil mutaffifeen
Woe to those who give less [than due],
ناپ اور تول میں کمی کرنے والوں کے لیے خرابی ہے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Woe waylun a term entailing chastisement; or it is the name of a valley in Hell to the defrauders
ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ
Allazeena izak taaloo 'alan naasi yastawfoon
Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full.
جو لوگوں سے ناپ کر لیں تو پورا لیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
those who when they take measure from people demand it in full the measure;
وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ
Wa izaa kaaloohum aw wazanoohum yukhsiroon
But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
اور جب ان کو ناپ کر یا تول کر دیں تو کم کر دیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
but who when they measure for them or weigh for them they cause them loss they diminish for them the measure or the weight.
أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ
Alaa yazunnu ulaaa'ika annahum mab'oosoon
Do they not think that they will be resurrected
کیا یہ لوگ نہیں جانتے کہ اٹھائے بھی جائیں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Do such individuals not know for certain alā indicates an interrogative of rebuke that they will be resurrected
لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ
Li Yawmin 'Azeem
For a tremendous Day -
(یعنی) ایک بڑے (سخت) دن میں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
for an awful day that is to say on it and this is the Day of Resurrection
يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ
Yawma yaqoomun naasu li Rabbil 'aalameen
The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
جس دن (تمام) لوگ رب العالمین کے سامنے کھڑے ہوں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a day when yawma is a substitution for the syntactical locus of li-yawmin ‘to an awful day’ and as such is in the accusative because of the verb mab‘ūthūna ‘will be resurrected’ mankind will rise from their graves before the Lord of the Worlds? the Lord of all creatures for His affair His reckoning and His requital.
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ
Kallaaa inna kitaabal fujjaari lafee Sijjeen
No! Indeed, the record of the wicked is in sijjeen.
سن رکھو کہ بدکارروں کے اعمال سجّین میں ہیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! verily the record of the profligates that is to say the record of the deeds of the disbelievers is in Sijjīn — this is said to be a book containing the record of all the deeds of the devils and the disbelievers; but it is also said to be a location in the lowermost part of the seventh earth the place of Satan and his hosts.
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ
Wa maa adraaka maa Sijjeen
And what can make you know what is sijjeen?
اور تم کیا جانتے ہوں کہ سجّین کیا چیز ہے؟
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
And what would tell you what Sijjīn is? what the book of Sijjīn is.
كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
Kitaabum marqoom
It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed.
ایک دفتر ہے لکھا ہوا
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
It is a sealed book.
وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ
Wailuny yawma'izil lil mukazzibeen
Woe, that Day, to the deniers,
اس دن جھٹلانے والوں کی خرابی ہے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Woe to the deniers on that day
ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ
Allazeena yukazziboona bi yawmid deen
Who deny the Day of Recompense.
(یعنی) جو انصاف کے دن کو جھٹلاتے ہیں

who deny the Day of Judgement the Day of Requital alladhīna yukadhdhibūna bi-yawmi’l-dīn either a substitution for or an explication of al-mukadhdhibīna ‘the deniers’;
وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ
Wa maa yukazzibu biheee illaa kullu mu'tadin aseem
And none deny it except every sinful transgressor.
اور اس کو جھٹلاتا وہی ہے جو حد سے نکل جانے والا گنہگار ہے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and none deny it but every sinful the form athīm is hyperbolic transgressor overstepping the bounds.
إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ
Izaa tutlaa'alaihi aayaatunaa qaala asaateerul awwaleen
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."
جب اس کو ہماری آیتیں سنائی جاتی ہیں تو کہتا ہے کہ یہ تو اگلے لوگوں کے افسانے ہیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
When Our signs of the Qur’ān are recited to him he says ‘Mere fables asātīr of the ancients!’ mere tales that were written down sutirat in ancient times asātīr is the plural of ustūra or istāra.
كَلَّا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ
Kallaa bal raana 'alaa quloobihim maa kaanoo yaksiboon
No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning.
دیکھو یہ جو (اعمال بد) کرتے ہیں ان کا ان کے دلوں پر زنگ بیٹھ گیا ہے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
No indeed! — a deterrent and a warning against saying such things. Rather there has slayed engulfed their hearts covering them like rust that which they earned of acts of disobedience.
كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ
Kallaaa innahum 'ar Rabbihim yawma'izil lamah jooboon
No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.
بےشک یہ لوگ اس روز اپنے پروردگار (کے دیدار) سے اوٹ میں ہوں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! verily they on that day the Day of Resurrection will be screened off from their Lord and so they will not see Him.
ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ
Summa innahum lasaa lul jaheem
Then indeed, they will [enter and] burn in Hellfire.
پھر دوزخ میں جا داخل ہوں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Then they will be exposed to Hell-fire then they will enter the scorching Fire;
ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ
Summa yuqaalu haazal lazee kuntum bihee tukazziboon
Then it will be said [to them], "This is what you used to deny."
پھر ان سے کہا جائے گا کہ یہ وہی چیز ہے جس کو تم جھٹلاتے تھے

then it will be said to them ‘This that is the chastisement is that which you used to deny!’
كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ
Kallaaa inna kitaabal abraari lafee'Illiyyeen
No! Indeed, the record of the righteous is in 'illiyyun.
(یہ بھی) سن رکھو کہ نیکوکاروں کے اعمال علیین میں ہیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Nay! verily the record of the pious that is the record of the deeds of the believers who were sincere in their faith is in ‘Illiyyūn — this is said to be the book containing all the good deeds of the angels and the believers from among the two heavy ones sc. mankind and jinn; but it is also said to be a place below the Throne in the seventh heaven;
وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ
Wa maaa adraaka maa 'Illiyyoon
And what can make you know what is 'illiyyun?
اور تم کو کیا معلوم کہ علیین کیا چیز ہے؟
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and what will tell you what will inform you what ‘Illiyyūn is? what the book of ‘Illiyyūn is.
كِتَٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ
Kitaabum marqoom
It is [their destination recorded in] a register inscribed
ایک دفتر ہے لکھا ہوا
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
It is a sealed book
يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
Yashhadu hul muqarra boon
Which is witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].
جس کے پاس مقرب (فرشتے) حاضر رہتے ہیں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
witnessed by those brought near from among the angels.
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ
Innal abraara lafee Na'eem
Indeed, the righteous will be in pleasure
بےشک نیک لوگ چین میں ہوں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Assuredly the pious will be amid bliss in Paradise
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
'Alal araaa'iki yanzuroon
On adorned couches, observing.
تختوں پر بیٹھے ہوئے نظارے کریں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
upon couches upon beds beneath canopies gazing at the bliss which they have been given.
تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
Ta'rifu fee wujoohihim nadratan na'eem
You will recognize in their faces the radiance of pleasure.
تم ان کے چہروں ہی سے راحت کی تازگی معلوم کر لو گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
You will perceive in their faces the radiancy of bliss the splendour and beauty of blissfulness
يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ
Yusqawna mir raheeqim makhtoom
They will be given to drink [pure] wine [which was] sealed.
ان کو خالص شراب سربمہر پلائی جائے گی
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
as they are given to drink a nectar a wine free of any impurities that is sealed in its vessel none other than them breaking its seal
خِتَٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَٰفِسُونَ
Khitaamuhoo misk; wa fee zaalika falyatanaafasil Mutanaafisoon
The last of it is musk. So for this let the competitors compete.
جس کی مہر مشک کی ہو گی تو (نعمتوں کے) شائقین کو چاہیے کہ اسی سے رغبت کریں
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
whose seal is musk that is whose final sip is followed by an emanating scent of musk — so for such bliss let the viers vie let them desire to apply themselves to obedience of God —
وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ
Wa mizaajuhoo min Tasneem
And its mixture is of Tasneem,
اور اس میں تسنیم (کے پانی) کی آمیزش ہو گی
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and whose mixture that is to say that with which it is mixed is of Tasnīm which is explained by His following words
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ
'Ainaiy yashrabu bihal muqarraboon
A spring from which those near [to Allah] drink.
وہ ایک چشمہ ہے جس میں سے (خدا کے) مقرب پیئیں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
a spring ‘aynan is in the accusative because of an implicit prefatory amdahu ‘I extol this spring’ from which those brought near will drink yashrabu bihā should be yashrabu minhā or it may be that bihā is used because yashrabu is meant to imply the sense of yaltadhdhu bihā ‘in which they delight’.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ
Innal lazeena ajramoo kaanoo minal lazeena aamanoo yadhakoon
Indeed, those who committed crimes used to laugh at those who believed.
جو گنہگار (یعنی کفار) ہیں وہ (دنیا میں) مومنوں سے ہنسی کیا کرتے تھے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Verily the guilty like Abū Jahl and his ilk used to laugh at the believers such as ‘Ammār b. Yāsir and Bilāl the Ethiopian and those like them in mockery of them;
وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ
Wa izaa marroo bihim yataghaamazoon
And when they passed by them, they would exchange derisive glances.
اور جب ان کے پاس سے گزرتے تو حقارت سے اشارے کرتے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
and when they the believers passed them by they would wink at one another the guilty beckoned with their eyebrows and eyelids towards the believers in mockery;
وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ
Wa izan qalabooo ilaaa ahlihimun qalaboo fakiheen
And when they returned to their people, they would return jesting.
اور جب اپنے گھر کو لوٹتے تو اتراتے ہوئے لوٹتے

and when they returned to their folks they would return blithely fākihīna a variant reading has fakihīna rejoicing in their disparaging mention of the believers;
وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ
Wa izaa ra awhum qaalooo inna haaa'ulaaa'i ladaaal loon
And when they saw them, they would say, "Indeed, those are truly lost."
اور جب ان (مومنوں) کو دیکھتے تو کہتے کہ یہ تو گمراہ ہیں

and when they see them that is the believers they say ‘Lo! these men are astray!’ on account of their belief in Muhammad (s).
وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَٰفِظِينَ
Wa maaa ursiloo 'alaihim haafizeen
But they had not been sent as guardians over them.
حالانکہ وہ ان پر نگراں بنا کر نہیں بھیجے گئے تھے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
God exalted be He says Yet they that is the disbelievers were not sent as watchers over them over the believers to preserve them or to keep a record of their deeds and thus guide them back to what is best for them.
فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ
Fal yawmal lazeena aamanoo minal kuffaari yadhakoon
So Today those who believed are laughing at the disbelievers,
تو آج مومن کافروں سے ہنسی کریں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
So today that is the Day of Resurrection the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers
عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
'Alal araaa'iki yanzuroon
On adorned couches, observing.
(اور) تختوں پر (بیٹھے ہوئے ان کا حال) دیکھ رہے ہوں گے
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
upon couches in Paradise gazing out from their dwellings at the disbelievers while they are being tortured; and they will laugh at them just as they the disbelievers had laughed at them in the world.
هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ
Hal suwwibal kuffaaru maa kaanoo yaf'aloon
Have the disbelievers [not] been rewarded [this Day] for what they used to do?
تو کافروں کو ان کے عملوں کا (پورا پورا) بدلہ مل گیا
Tafsir al-Jalalayn
Have the disbelievers been requited for what they used to do? Yes indeed!
