Chastity and Modesty

Chastity (ʿIffah) and modesty (Ḥayāʾ) are beautiful virtues cherished deeply in Islam, guiding believers towards purity of heart and conduct. They encompass guarding one's gaze and private parts, as well as maintaining appropriate adornment and behavior for both men and women. The Quran encourages believers to seek marriage to attain chastity, as seen when it mentions desiring [chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse] and describes women in marriage as [chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers]. Modesty, or Ḥayāʾ, is often described as a spiritual shyness that prevents one from acting improperly. It manifests outwardly through dress and demeanor, with clothing serving not just as adornment but also [to conceal your private parts]. This concept is rooted in the very beginning of humanity, as Satan's temptation sought [to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them of their private parts]. Beyond physical covering, chastity involves purity in thoughts and actions, exemplified by Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) who, when tempted, sought [the refuge of Allah] against wrongdoing, demonstrating profound inner strength and commitment to chastity. These principles are vital for fostering a society built on respect, dignity, and spiritual integrity, inviting Muslims to live lives that reflect inner purity and reverence for their Creator.

Quran 17 verses

And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allah upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. So for whatever you enjoy [of marriage] from them, give them their due compensation as an obligation. And there is no blame upon you for what you mutually agree to beyond the obligation. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.
