Abraham's father (Azar)

Abraham's father, often identified as Azar in Islamic tradition, holds a significant, albeit challenging, place in the life and prophetic mission of Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim, peace be upon him). He was a devout polytheist, deeply involved in the crafting and worship of idols, representing the very falsehood Abraham was sent to transcend. The Quran beautifully narrates Abraham's tender yet persistent call to his father, questioning [why he worshipped that which did not hear, see, or benefit him]. With immense wisdom and patience, Abraham sought to guide his father to [an even path], urging him away from idolatry and toward the worship of the One God. Despite Abraham's sincere and compassionate appeals, Azar remained steadfast in his rejection of monotheism. This narrative profoundly illustrates the challenges prophets faced, even within their own families, when conveying the truth of divine unity (Tawhid). Ultimately, Abraham's love for Allah superseded his familial ties, and [when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him]. This powerful story serves as a reminder for believers about the supremacy of faith and the unwavering commitment to Allah's oneness, even when it demands difficult choices. Yet, Abraham's enduring compassion is also evident, as he later prayed, [Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established].

Quran 14 verses

Wa maa kaanas tighfaaru ibraaheema li abeehi illaa 'ammaw 'idatinw wa 'adahaaa iyyaahu falammaa tabaiyana lahooo annahoo 'aduwwul lillaahi tabarra a minh; inna Ibraaheema la awwaahum haleem

And the request of forgiveness of Abraham for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became apparent to Abraham that his father was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed was Abraham compassionate and patient.

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: This put some Muslims into doubt. Was it not, they thought, that Sayyidna Ibrahim ؓ too had prayed for his disbelieving father?
