Supplication (Du'a)

الدعاء

"Du'a" (الدُّعَاء), or supplication, is a cherished and intimate act of worship in Islam, representing a direct, personal appeal to Allah. It is an expression of the human heart's deepest desires, fears, and gratitude, affirming complete reliance on the Divine Creator. Through Du'a, believers converse with their Lord, finding solace and strength in the certainty that Allah is [ever near and responds to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Him]. Muslims are encouraged to remember Allah in all states, [while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides], and to turn to Him with sincere requests, whether for guidance, forgiveness, or blessings. Examples include pleas like, ["Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds"], or the tender prayer for parents, ["My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small"]. This continuous spiritual connection, recognizing Allah's vast mercy and power, deepens faith, brings peace to the soul, and underscores the profound relationship between the Creator and His creation.

Quran 20 verses

ٱلَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ ٱللَّهَ قِيَٰمًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِى خَلْقِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَٰطِلًا سُبْحَٰنَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ

Allazeena yazkuroonal laaha qiyaamaiw-wa qu'oodanw-wa 'alaa juno obihim wa yatafakkaroona fee khalqis samaawaati wal ardi Rabbanaa maa khalaqta haaza baatilan Subhaanak faqinaa 'azaaban Naar

Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

جو کھڑے اور بیٹھے اور لیٹے (ہر حال میں) خدا کو یاد کرتے اور آسمان اور زمین کی پیدائش میں غور کرتے (اور کہتے ہیں) کہ اے پروردگار! تو نے اس (مخلوق) کو بے فائدہ نہیں پیدا کیا تو پاک ہے تو (قیامت کے دن) ہمیں دوزخ کے عذاب سے بچائیو

رَّبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِى لِلْإِيمَٰنِ أَنْ ءَامِنُوا۟ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَـَٔامَنَّا رَبَّنَا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ

Rabbanaaa innanaa sami'naa munaadiyai yunaadee lil eemaani an aaminoo bi Rabbikum fa aamannaa; Rabbanaa faghfir lanaa zunoobanaa wa kaffir 'annaa saiyi aatina wa tawaffanaa ma'al abraar

Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die with the righteous.

اے پروردگارہم نے ایک ندا کرنے والے کو سنا کہ ایمان کے لیے پکار رہا تھا (یعنی) اپنے پروردگار پر ایمان لاؤ تو ہم ایمان لے آئے اے پروردگار ہمارے گناہ معاف فرما اور ہماری برائیوں کو ہم سے محو کر اور ہم کو دنیا سے نیک بندوں کے ساتھ اٹھا

Rabbanaa wa aatinaa maa wa'attanaa 'alaa Rusulika wa laa tukhzinaa Yawmal Qiyaamah; innaka laa tukhliful mee'aad

Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."

اے پروردگار تو نے جن جن چیزوں کے ہم سے اپنے پیغمبروں کے ذریعے سے وعدے کیے ہیں وہ ہمیں عطا فرما اور قیامت کے دن ہمیں رسوا نہ کیجو کچھ شک نہیں کہ تو خلاف وعدہ نہیں کرتا

وَيَدْعُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ بِٱلشَّرِّ دُعَآءَهُۥ بِٱلْخَيْرِ وَكَانَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ عَجُولًا

Wa yad'ul insaanu bishsharri du'aaa 'ahoo bilkhayr; wa kaanal insaanu 'ajoola

And man supplicates for evil as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.

اور انسان جس طرح (جلدی سے) بھلائی مانگتا ہے اسی طرح برائی مانگتا ہے۔ اور انسان جلد باز (پیدا ہوا) ہے

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Perhaps, it is based on this congruity that it was said in verse 11 that man would, on occasions, pray for something in a haste, something that spells out destruction for him. Wakhfid lahumaa janaahaz zulli minar rahmati wa qur Rabbir hamhumaa kamaa rabbayaanee sagheera

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

اور عجزو نیاز سے ان کے آگے جھکے رہو اور ان کے حق میں دعا کرو کہ اے پروردگار جیسا انہوں نے مجھے بچپن میں (شفقت سے) پرورش کیا ہے تو بھی اُن (کے حال) پر رحمت فرما

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: 4. Submit yourself before them in humility out of compassion - (وَاخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ الذُّلِّ مِنَ الرَّ‌حْمَةِ ). This is the fourth instruction. Wa qur Rabbi adkhilnee mudkhala sidqinw wa akhrijnee mukhraja sidqinw waj'al lee milladunka sultaanan naseeraa

And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."

اور کہو کہ اے پروردگار مجھے (مدینے میں) اچھی طرح داخل کیجیو اور (مکے سے) اچھی طرح نکالیو۔ اور اپنے ہاں سے زور وقوت کو میرا مددگار بنائیو

Qaala Rabbi innee zalamtu nafsee faghfir lee faghafaralah; innahoo Huwal Ghafoorur Raheem

He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

بولے کہ اے پروردگار میں نے اپنے آپ پر ظلم کیا تو مجھے بخش دے تو خدا نے اُن کو بخش دیا۔ بیشک وہ بخشنے والا مہربان ہے

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: قَالَ رَ‌بِّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي فَاغْفِرْ‌ لِي فَغَفَرَ‌ لَهُ (He said, "0 my Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me." So he forgave him - 28:16). Innal laaha wa malaaa'i katahoo yusalloona 'alan Nabiyy; yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo salloo 'alaihi wa sallimoo tasleemaa

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّاءَ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، فِي قَوْلِهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ ‏{‏ وَلاَ تَجْهَرْ بِصَلاَتِكَ وَلاَ تُخَافِتْ بِهَا‏}‏ قَالَتْ أُنْزِلَ هَذَا فِي الدُّعَاءِ ‏.‏

A'isha reported that so far as these words of (Allah) Glorious and High are concerned:" And utter not thy prayer loudly, not be low in it" (xvii. 110) relate to supplication (du'a)

یحییٰ بن زکریا نے ہشام بن عروہ سے ، انہوں نے اپنے والد سے اور انہوں نے حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے اللہ تعالیٰ کے اسی فرمان : ’’ نہ اپنی نماز میں ( قراءت ) بلند کریں اور نہ آہستہ ‘ ‘ کے بارے میں روایت کی کہ انہوں نے ( عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا ) نے کہا کہ یہ آیت دعا کے بارے میں اتری ہے ۔
