Jonah (Yunus) bin Matta

يونس بن متى

Jonah, known in Arabic as Yunus bin Matta, is a revered prophet in Islam, whose compelling story is beautifully narrated in the Quran. He is often referred to as [Dhun-Nun, the man of the fish] due to the miraculous event that became central to his narrative. Sent by Allah to a large community, Jonah became disheartened when they initially rejected his message and departed prematurely. As a result, he was swallowed by a great fish, an ordeal from which he cried out to Allah in profound repentance and glorification, saying, [There is no god but You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers]. Allah, in His infinite mercy, saved Jonah, casting him onto the shore, weak but alive. This experience served as a powerful lesson in patience and perseverance, not only for Jonah but for all believers. Subsequently, Jonah returned to his people, who by then had repented and embraced faith, demonstrating the transformative power of divine guidance and collective seeking of forgiveness. His story, recounted in detail in Surah As-Saffat, is a poignant reminder of Allah's boundless compassion and the importance of never losing hope, even in the direst circumstances. The Quran dedicates a whole chapter, Surah Yunus, highlighting divine wisdom and the significance of a prophet's steadfastness.
