Story of Jonah's People

The story of the people of Prophet Jonah (Yunus) holds a special place in Islamic tradition, offering a profound lesson in repentance and divine mercy. Unlike other communities who faced destruction for their disbelief, this was a [single city that believed so its faith benefited it] *before* the decreed punishment fully descended. Prophet Jonah was sent to a vast community, [of a hundred thousand or more], to call them to Allah. Initially, they resisted his message. When signs of impending doom became clear, and seeing their prophet depart, the people were seized with remorse. They collectively turned to Allah in sincere repentance, humbling themselves and pleading for forgiveness. In an extraordinary act of mercy, Allah accepted their genuine change of heart. [They believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time], lifting the looming punishment of disgrace and granting them continued peace. This narrative powerfully illustrates Allah's infinite compassion and the immense value of sincere, collective repentance, reminding believers that divine mercy can avert even a determined decree when hearts truly turn to their Creator.

Quran 3 verses

Falaw laa kaanat qaryatun aamanat fanafa'ahaaa eemaanuhaaa illaa qawma Yoonusa lammaaa aamanoo kashafnaa 'anhum 'azaabal khizyi fil hayaatid dunyaa wa matta'naahum ilaa heen

Then has there not been a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it except the people of Jonah? When they believed, We removed from them the punishment of disgrace in worldly life and gave them enjoyment for a time.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: In the seventh verse (98), the heedless deniers of truth have been admonished for their failure to make the optimum use of the time of life allowed to them. There was still time for them to leave denial and contumacy. Otherwise, an ominous time was due to come when they will make Taubah but their Ta...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: If only there had been one town — meaning its inhabitants — that believed before chastisement befell it and profited by its belief — except for the people of Jonah when they believed after seeing a portent of the chastisement for they did not wait to believe until it came to pass We removed from upo...
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Belief at the Time of Punishment did not help except with the People of Yunus Allah asked, `did any town from the previous nations, believe in its entirety when they received the Messengers All of the Messengers that We sent before you, O Muhammad, were denied by their people or the majority of thei...

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: It was said in verse 147: Y); (And We had sent him [ as messenger ] to one hundred thousand, or more). A difficulty may arise here. Is it not that Allah Ta’ ala is Knowing and Aware? Why would He have to express the doubt that the number of thos...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And We sent him afterwards — as We had done before to a people in Nineveh in the region of Mosul — to a community of a hundred thousand or in fact more — a community of twenty thirty or seventy thousand.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: The expression: إِلَىٰ حِينٍ (ila hin: for a time) in: فَآمَنُوا فَمَتَّعْنَاهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ ([ 147] So, they believed, then, We let them enjoy for a time.- 148) means that as long as they did not revert to their kufr and shirk, no punishment visited them.
