Satan's Footsteps

خُطُوَات الشَّيْطَان

"Satan's Footsteps" (خُطُوَات الشَّيْطَان) is a profound concept in Islamic tradition, referring to the subtle, gradual, and deceptive methods by which Iblis (Satan) attempts to lead humanity astray. It’s a gentle yet firm warning from Allah, reminding believers that temptation rarely manifests as a sudden, overt act of evil. Instead, Satan often entices individuals through a series of seemingly minor, incremental steps that gradually erode one's resolve and draw them towards wrongdoing. The Quran repeatedly cautions against this insidious influence. Believers are admonished to [enter into Islam completely and perfectly and do not follow the footsteps of Satan], underscoring the importance of holistic commitment to faith as a shield. Furthermore, even in matters of permissible sustenance, Muslims are advised to [eat of what Allah has provided for you and do not follow the footsteps of Satan], highlighting his pervasive attempts to distort even lawful actions. Recognizing these subtle traps is vital for spiritual vigilance, empowering believers to guard against immoral thoughts and actions, and to seek Allah's protection from the clear enemy that Satan is.

Quran 2 verses

Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanud khuloo fis silmi kaaaffatanw wa laa tattabi'oo khutuwaatish Shaitaan; innahoo lakum 'aduwwum mubeen

O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Commentary Mentioned in the previous verses was how astray the disbelievers of Makkah had gone when they had taken their self-carved, lifeless, insensate idols as partners in the Divinity of Allah as they made them share in animals created by Him and in many other blessings which were bestowed on th...
