Abolition of Pre-Islamic Practices

The advent of Islam brought about a profound transformation for Arabian society, marking a clear departure from the customs of *Jahiliyyah*, the pre-Islamic era often characterized by ignorance and injustice. Central to this divine reform was the abolition of practices that were immoral, oppressive, or rooted in superstition. The Quran, as a guide for humanity, systematically dismantled social norms that contradicted justice, human dignity, and pure monotheism. For instance, the practice of inheriting women or marrying stepmothers was explicitly forbidden, with Allah declaring, [do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married], labeling it an 'immorality and hateful.' Similarly, the abhorrent act of female infanticide, driven by fear or shame, was strongly condemned, as partners of polytheists [made [to seem] pleasing the killing of their children]. Furthermore, numerous superstitious taboos concerning livestock, like those surrounding [bahirah or sa'ibah or wasilah or ham], were declared baseless inventions against Allah. This comprehensive reform purified society, establishing a new framework built on equity, compassion, and submission to the One God, replacing societal ills with [a straight path].

Quran 14 verses

Wa laa tankihoo maa nakaha aabaaa'ukum minan nisaaa'i illaa maa qad salaf; inahoo kaana faahishatanw wa maqtanw wa saaa'a sabeelaa

And do not marry those [women] whom your fathers married, except what has already occurred. Indeed, it was an immorality and hateful [to Allah] and was evil as a way.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: The present verses are an extension of the description of evil practices common in Jahiliyyah which have been taken up earlier. A detailed discussion appears in the Commentary. Commentary: These verses give details of محرَّمات muharramat, that is, women with whom marriage is prohibited. Some of them...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And do not marry women whom mā means man your fathers married unless it be a thing of the past which is forgiven you; surely that marrying them is obscene vile and abominable maqtan means it results in maqt ‘severe hate’ from God an evil way an evil path is this.
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Meaning of `Inheriting Women Against Their Will Al-Bukhari recorded that Ibn `Abbas said about the Ayah, (O you who believe! You are not permitted to inherit women against their will,) "Before, the practice was that...

Allah has not appointed [such innovations as] bahirah or sa'ibah or wasilah or ham. But those who disbelieve invent falsehood about Allah, and most of them do not reason.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: The Definition of Bahirah and Sa'ibah The names Bahirah, Sa'ibah, WasiIah and Hami are connected with customs prevailing during the days of Jahiliyyah. Commentators differ in their exegesis. It is possible that all these words were applied each to a different situation. We limit ourselves to the exp...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: God has not ordained He has not stipulated in His Law anything such as a Bahīra a Sā’iba a Wasīla or a Hām in the way that people did at the time of paganism. Al-Bukhārī reported in a hadīth from Sa‘īd b. al-Musayyab who said ‘The bahīra is that camel whose milk is consecrated to idols and whom no h...
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): The Meaning of Bahirah, Sa'ibah, Wasilah and Ham Al-Bukhari recorded that Sa`id bin Al-Musayyib said, "The Bahirah is a female camel whose milk was spared for the idols and no one was allowed to milk it. And likewise, to many of the polytheists their partners have made [to seem] pleasing the killing of their children in order to bring about their destruction and to cover them with confusion in their religion. And if Allah had willed, they would not have done so. So leave them and that which they invent.

He will punish them for what they were inventing.

Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allah and [thus] make lawful what Allah has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command of Allah accomplished.
