The House (Kaaba)

The Kaaba, affectionately known as "The House" (al-Bayt), is the holiest sanctuary in Islam, situated in the heart of Mecca. This ancient cubical structure serves as the Qiblah, the sacred direction towards which Muslims worldwide turn in prayer, symbolizing unity and a shared focus in devotion. Its venerable origins trace back to [when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael], who were commanded by God to [purify My House] for those who circumambulate it, pray, and worship. The Quran uniquely designates it as [the first House [of worship] established for mankind], a blessed beacon and guidance for all worlds. More than a mere building, the Kaaba stands as a spiritual epicenter, providing believers with [a place of return for the people and [a place of] security]. It is the focal point for the annual Hajj pilgrimage and the lesser Umrah, inviting millions to connect with a timeless legacy of faith and communal worship. The House thus represents an enduring symbol of monotheism, calling hearts towards divine remembrance.

Quran 11 verses

Wa iz ja'alnal Baita masaabatal linnassi wa amnanw wattakhizoo mim Maqaami Ibraaheema musallaaa; wa 'ahidnaaa ilaaa Ibraaheema wa Ismaa'eela an tahhiraa Baitiya littaaa'ifeena wal'aakifeena warrukka'is sujood

And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: The History of Ka'bah In the course of the story of Sayyidna Ibrahim (علیہ السلام) ، we now come to the building of the "House of Allah" - the Ka'bah کعبہ . Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Verse 127 shows another essential quality of this great prophet. In obedience to Allah, he had left the fertile land of Syria and made his wife and child to settle in the barren desert, and now he was taking up the labour of building "the House of Allah." This was a moment when a man who had been be...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And mention when Abraham raised up the foundations the supports or the walls of the House building it min al-bayt ‘of the House’ is semantically connected to yarfa‘u ‘raises up’ and Ishmael with him wa-Ismā‘īlu is a supplement to Ibrāhīmu both of them saying ‘Our Lord! Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): The Command to purify the House Al-Hasan Al-Basri said that, (And We gave Our 'Ahd (command) to Ibrahim and Isma`il) means, "Allah ordered them to purify it from all filth and impurities, of which none should ever touch it." Also, Ibn Jurayj said, "I said...

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'umrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: The subject of the Ka'bah کعبہ ، as we would do well to recollect, started all the way back from Verse 124 : 'And when his Lord put Ibrahim to a test', later opening with the statement that the Ka'bah کعبہ was made a place for repeated convergence, a sanctuary, and a centre of divine worship as orda...

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Commentary: The above verse points out to the distinction and superiority of the House of Allah, the Ka'bah, as compared to the houses, and even mosques, of the whole world.
