The Great Flood

الطُّوفَان

The Great Flood, known in Arabic as *al-Tufan*, is a profound event recounted in the Quran, signifying Allah's justice and mercy. It describes the devastating deluge sent upon the people of Prophet Nuh (Noah) after centuries of his earnest warning. Nuh called his people to [worship Allah, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner"], urging them to abandon idol worship and submit to the One God. Despite his persistent efforts, [they said, "Never leave your gods"] and stubbornly rejected his message, mocking him instead. As divine retribution for their disbelief and transgression, Allah commanded Nuh to [construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration], an ark that would carry him, his family (except for his disbelieving son and wife), and pairs of every living creature. When the flood came, [the earth erupted with springs, and the sky poured forth rain], engulfing the land and destroying all disbelievers. This cataclysm serves as [a sign for mankind], a timeless reminder of the consequences of denying God's messengers and a testament to His power and ultimate justice, while also highlighting His mercy for those who believe and repent.

Quran 1 verse

Wa qawma Noohil lammaa kazzabur Rusula aghraqnaahum wa ja'alnaahum linnaasi Aayatanw wa a'tadnaa lizzaalimeena 'azaaban aleemaa

And the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Commentary In the above verses it is mentioned that it had been the common practice of the people through the ages to rebuff the prophets and the message they had brought. Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And mention the people of Noah when they denied the messengers in denying Noah — it is as though he were many messengers given the length of time he remained among them; or it is thus expressed in the plural because to deny him is equivalent to denying all the other messengers for they all came with...
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Frightening the Idolators of Quraysh Allah threatens the idolators who denied and opposed His Messenger Muhammad ﷺ and He warns them of the punishment and painful torment He sent upon the previous nations who rejected their Messengers.
