Persecution/Discord

In Islamic tradition, the term *fitnah* (الْفِتْنَة) encompasses a profound and multifaceted concept, rooted in the idea of a test or trial. While it can refer to any challenging situation that tests one's faith and resolve, its meaning often extends to grave forms of religious persecution, social discord, or sedition that threaten to lead believers astray from Allah's path. The Quran frequently emphasizes the severe danger of *fitnah*, stating that [persecution is worse than killing] because it strikes at the heart of one's spiritual well-being and commitment to truth. This underscores why the early Muslim community was enjoined to strive [until there is no more fitnah and worship is for Allah], ensuring that people could worship Allah freely without coercion or corruption. *Fitnah* also highlights the potential for internal strife and division, as Allah warns that He is [Able to send upon you affliction... or to confuse you [so you become] sects]. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of steadfastness in faith, unity within the community, and vigilance against forces that seek to undermine belief and sow discord, urging believers to seek divine protection from all forms of trial that could lead them astray.

Quran 9 verses

Waqtuloohum haisu saqif tumoohum wa akhrijoohum min haisu akhrajookum; walfitnatu ashaddu minal qatl; wa laa tuqaatiloohum 'indal Majidil Haraami hattaa yaqaatilookum feehi fa in qaatalookum faqtuloohum; kazaalika jazaaa'ul kaafireen

And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- Haram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.

Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.

They ask you about the sacred month - about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Haram and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allah. And fitnah is greater than killing." And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.

O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief of those who say, "We believe" with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages, saying "If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware." But he for whom Allah intends fitnah - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allah. Those are the ones for whom Allah does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.
