Unity Among Muslims

Unity among Muslims, or *Wahdat al-Muslimeen*, is a cherished principle in Islam, emphasizing that believers are a single brotherhood, bound by faith and mutual love. It highlights the profound connection that Allah cultivates in the hearts of those who believe, fostering a spirit of cooperation and solidarity. The Quran beautifully illustrates this bond, reminding us that [the believers are allies of one another], tasked with supporting and assisting each other in righteousness. This unity is not merely an ideal but a practical necessity, as disunity can lead to profound societal challenges; indeed, [if you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption]. Islam calls for actively nurturing this bond, urging reconciliation and justice when disagreements arise, instructing believers to [make settlement between the two] factions in conflict. The early Muslim community in Madinah exemplified this, with the Ansar [loving those who emigrated to them], offering hospitality and selflessness. Upholding this unity is essential for the strength and well-being of the Muslim *Ummah*, reflecting the very essence of collective submission to Allah.

Quran 5 verses

Innal lazeena aamanoo wa haajaroo wa jaahadoo bi amwaalihim wa anfusihim fee sabeelil laahi wallazeena aawaw wa nasarooo ulaaa'ika ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; wallazeena aamanoo wa lam yuhaajiroo maa lakum minw walaayatihim min shai'in hatta yuhaajiroo; wa inistan sarookum fid deeni fa'alaiku munnasru illaa 'alaa qawmim bainakum wa bainahum meesaaq; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer

Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no guardianship of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Commentary These are the last four verses of Surah Al-Anfal. The real objective therein is to describe the injunctions of Hijrah (Emigration) which relate to the inheritance of Muhajir (Emigrant) Muslims. In contrast, also mentioned there is the inheritance of non-Muhajir Muslims and non-Muslims. Th...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: Truly those who believed and emigrated and strove with their wealth and their lives in the way of God these being the Emigrants and those who provided refuge for the Prophet s and assisted these being the Helpers those are allies of one another in terms of mutual support and inheritance. Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): The Muhajirin and Al-Ansar are the Supporters of One Another Here Allah mentions the types of believers, dividing them into the Muhajirin, who left their homes and estates, emigrating to give support to Allah and His Messenger to establish His religion.

Wallazeena kafaroo ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; illaa taf'aloohu takun fitnatun fil ardi wa fasaadun kabeer

And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Said in the second verse (And those who disbelieve are friends to each other). The word: وَلِی (waliyy) used here, as stated earlier, carries a general sense included wherein is inheritance as well as the guardianship and patronage of affairs....
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And those who disbelieve are allies of one another in terms of mutual support and inheritance and so there is no inheriting between you and them. Unless you do this unless you ally yourselves with the believers and sever relations with the disbelievers there will be sedition in the land and great co...
Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): The Disbelievers are Allies of Each Other; the Muslims are not their Allies After Allah mentioned that the believers are the supporters of one another, He severed all ties of support between them and the disbelievers. In his Mustadrak, Al-Hakim recorded that Usamah said that the Prophet said, «لَا ي...

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

And [also for] those who were settled in al-Madinah and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation.
