Humiliation

ذُلّ

In Islamic tradition, the concept of *dhull* (humiliation) signifies a profound state of disgrace or abasement, often understood as a divine consequence for severe disobedience and transgression. It is not merely a worldly setback but a spiritual condition reflecting Allah's displeasure and justice. The Quran describes this state as a direct result of disbelief, rejection of divine signs, and injustice towards prophets. For instance, some communities were [covered with humiliation and poverty] because they disbelieved in Allah's signs and killed prophets without right, a consequence reiterated when it is said [they have been put under humiliation by Allah wherever they are overtaken]. This theme underscores the critical importance of faith and obedience to Allah. The ultimate form of *dhull* is the disgrace awaiting wrongdoers in the Hereafter, as [whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him]. Conversely, believers are promised honor and dignity through sincere devotion and striving to fulfill Allah's commands. Thus, *dhull* serves as a powerful reminder of divine justice and the dire spiritual ramifications of forsaking the path of righteousness and succumbing to arrogance, as exemplified when [Pharaoh and his people were overcome right there and became debased].

And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allah [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.
