Hijrah

الهجرة

The Hijrah, meaning "migration" or "emigration," refers to the pivotal journey of Prophet Muhammad and his early Muslim followers from Mecca to Yathrib (later renamed Medina) in 622 CE. Facing increasing persecution and hostility in Mecca, where their monotheistic message challenged the prevailing idolatry, the Prophet ﷺ sought a new sanctuary where the nascent Muslim community could flourish and practice their faith freely. This migration was not an escape but a strategic move, undertaken after receiving an invitation from the people of Medina to establish peace and leadership there. The Hijrah is far more than a physical journey; it marks a profound turning point in Islamic history. It signifies the transition from a persecuted minority to the foundation of the first Islamic society and state. So critical was this event that it became the starting point of the Islamic calendar (Hijri calendar). The Quran celebrates those who [emigrate for Allah after they had been wronged], promising them a good settlement, and often speaks of the reward for those who [emigrate in the way of Allah], highlighting the spiritual significance of sacrificing one's comfort and homeland for the divine cause. The Hijrah thus embodies themes of sacrifice, resilience, trust in God, and the establishment of justice, offering enduring lessons for Muslims worldwide.
