Expedition of Raji'

سرية الرجيع

The Expedition of Raji' was a poignant and tragic event in early Islamic history, occurring in the 4th year of Hijra. A group of the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ companions, known for their piety and knowledge, were sent to teach Islam to the tribes of Adal and Qaarah near Mecca. However, these tribes treacherously betrayed them at a place called Raji'. Most of the companions were martyred on the spot, while others, like Khubayb ibn Adiy and Zayd ibn ad-Dathinnah, were captured and later executed by the Quraysh in Mecca. This incident highlights the immense sacrifices made by the early Muslims in spreading the message of Islam. The unwavering faith and steadfastness of the companions in the face of certain death, particularly Khubayb's moving prayer before his martyrdom, serve as enduring inspirations. The Quran reminds believers of the high status of those who fall in Allah's path, assuring us that they are [not dead, but alive with their Lord, receiving provision]. This event underscored the dangers faced by the nascent Muslim community and strengthened their resolve, trusting that [Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs] in times of trial. It also reminds us of the divine promise that [Allah does not let the reward of the doers of good be lost].
