Battle of Goliath and David

The Battle of Goliath and David, known in Arabic as Ma’rakat Jalut wa Dawud, holds a profound place in Islamic tradition as a testament to faith, courage, and divine intervention. It recounts the inspiring story where Prophet Talut (Saul) led the Children of Israel against the formidable army of Goliath. The Quran vividly describes Talut's test of his soldiers at a river, where [only a steadfast few remained], trusting in Allah amidst fear and doubt. As the two armies confronted each other, those believers who were certain of their return to Allah supplicated with fervent prayers, beseeching, [“Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people”]. In a pivotal moment, the young David, an unlikely hero, courageously stepped forward. By Allah’s permission, [David killed Goliath], securing a miraculous victory for the Children of Israel. This event not only marked a turning point but also led to David being granted kingship and prophethood, teaching humanity that [how many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah]. It remains a powerful reminder of Allah’s justice and the profound impact of unwavering trust in His plan.

And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allah will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allah said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient."

(He said: Allah is going to test you by a river). Tafsir al-Jalalayn: And when Saul went forth with the hosts from the Holy House sc. Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Allah states that Talut, the king of the Children of Israel, marched forth with his soldiers and the Israelites who obeyed him. His army was of eighty thousand then, according to As-Suddi, but Allah knows best. (Verily, Allah will try you) meaning, He will test...

Wa lammaa barazoo liJaaloota wa junoodihee qaaloo Rabbanaaa afrigh 'alainaa sabranw wa sabbit aqdaamanaa wansurnaa 'alal qawmil kaafireen

And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."

So they defeated them by permission of Allah, and David killed Goliath, and Allah gave him the kingship and prophethood and taught him from that which He willed. And if it were not for Allah checking [some] people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted, but Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.
