Charity (Sadaqah)

Sadaqah, often translated as charity, is a beautiful and expansive concept in Islam that embodies voluntary giving for the sake of Allah. Distinct from the obligatory annual almsgiving of Zakat, Sadaqah is a heartfelt act of spending from what Allah has provided, seeking only His pleasure and reward. It is a spiritual investment, a "goodly loan" to Allah [57:11], which He promises to multiply many times over. Giving Sadaqah is a profound expression of gratitude and compassion, purifying one's wealth and soul. The Quran beautifully illustrates its abundant reward, comparing it to a seed that sprouts seven spikes, each bearing a hundred grains [2:261]. This continuous act of generosity, whether given publicly or in secret, brings peace and removes fear [2:274]. It is a vital opportunity for believers to earn immense blessings and righteousness, with a poignant reminder that one should spend from their provision "before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous'" [63:10]. Through Sadaqah, Muslims actively strive to uplift their communities and draw closer to their Creator.

Quran 1 verse

Wa anifqoo mim maa razaqnaakum min qabli any-yaatiya ahadakumul mawtu fa yaqoola rabbi law laaa akhkhartaneee ilaaa ajalin qareebin fa assaddaqa wa akum minassaaliheen

And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous."
