Emigration (Hijra)

The term Hijra, meaning "emigration" or "migration," holds profound significance in Islam, most famously referring to the Prophet Muhammad's journey from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This pivotal event marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar and the establishment of the first Muslim community-state, transforming the nascent faith from a persecuted minority to a thriving society. Beyond this historical migration, Hijra embodies a spiritual principle: leaving behind what compromises one's faith or inhibits the practice of Islam for the sake of Allah. The Quran frequently extols the virtues of those who emigrate, promising immense reward. [Those who emigrated for [the cause of] Allah after they had been wronged - We will surely settle them in this world in a good place; but the reward of the Hereafter is greater]. It can also signify a move from spiritual darkness to light, or from disobedience to obedience. The Quran warns against complacency, reminding believers that [Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?] if faced with oppression. Indeed, [whoever emigrates for the cause of Allah will find on the earth many [alternative] locations and abundance]. Hijra, therefore, is not merely a physical journey, but a profound commitment to one's faith, demonstrating sacrifice and trust in divine provision. It continues to inspire Muslims to prioritize their spiritual well-being and seek environments where their faith can flourish.

Quran 7 verses

And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allah, and Allah has with Him the best reward."

They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.

Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.

O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah; He judges between you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
