1,356 words89 Quran verses cited9 hadith cited

A heavy silence hung over the land. For generations, people had turned away from the One God, fashioning idols with their own hands and bowing down to them. They forgot who truly sustained them, who brought the rain and grew the crops. In this world of forgetfulness, a prophet named Nuh, peace be upon him, stood alone, his heart heavy with concern for his people.

The Clear Warner

Nuh, peace be upon him, was a man of great patience, chosen by Allah from among all peoples. He was a messenger, just like Adam and the prophets who came after them, bringing the same message:

For nearly a thousand years, as Allah revealed, Nuh, peace be upon him, invited his people day and night. "O my people," he pleaded, "I am to you a clear warner. I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly."

He urged them to remember the favors of Allah, to turn away from their idols. He reminded them that he was just a man like them, not an angel, nor did he claim to know the unseen or possess Allah's treasures. He simply delivered the message from the Lord of the worlds.

But the eminent people among them, those who held power and influence, mocked him. "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves," they sneered, "and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us and at first suggestion. And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars." They looked down on the poor and humble who had chosen to believe Nuh, peace be upon him, seeing their humble status as a reason to reject the message.

The disbelievers grew tired of Nuh’s constant reminders. "O Noah," they challenged, "you have disputed us and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you should be of the truthful." They demanded proof, a punishment, something to make them believe.

Nuh, peace be upon him, responded, "Allah will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause Him failure." He knew that his advice would not benefit them if Allah had intended for them to persist in error.

A Ship on Dry Land

Then, a solemn revelation came to Nuh, peace be upon him. Allah informed him, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing." His long struggle had yielded only a few believers.

The next command was astonishing: "And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are to be drowned."

Imagine Nuh, peace be upon him, a prophet, beginning to build a massive ship far from any water, on dry land. The people, who had already scorned him for his message, now found a new reason to ridicule him. Whenever the eminent of his people passed by, they would point and laugh. "What is this old man doing?" they might have whispered. "Building a ship in the desert? Is he mad?"

Nuh, peace be upon him, responded with calm certainty, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule." He knew a day would come when the tables would turn.

He continued his work with his small band of believers, meticulously following Allah’s instructions. The ship grew, plank by plank, nail by nail, a testament to their unwavering faith in the unseen command of their Lord.

The Flood Begins

The day finally came when Allah's command arrived. The signs were unmistakable. The ovens overflowed with water, not fire, a strange and terrifying omen. The heavens opened, . The earth itself responded,

Nuh, peace be upon him, was instructed: "Load upon the ship of each creature two mates and your family, except those about whom the word has preceded, and include whoever has believed." He gathered the animals, two of every kind, male and female. He gathered his family and the few who had believed with him. Ibn Kathir mentions that only a few had believed with him.

As the water began to rise, Nuh, peace be upon him, cried out to his people one last time, "Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

The ship set sail amidst towering waves, described as being . The scene was chaotic, terrifying, yet within the ark, there was peace and reliance on Allah.

A Father's Plea, A Son's Rejection

Amidst the raging waters, Nuh, peace be upon him, spotted his son, who had stubbornly refused to believe. He was apart from the ark, perhaps clinging to hope in the high ground. A father's love, even in that dire moment, compelled Nuh, peace be upon him, to call out: ""

But his son, full of false confidence, replied, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." He believed that the height of the mountain would save him from the rising tide.

Nuh, peace be upon him, heartbroken, reiterated the truth: "" Before another word could be uttered, the mighty waves rose between them, separating father and son forever. Nuh’s son was among the drowned.

Overwhelmed with grief and concern for his family, Nuh, peace be upon him, called to his Lord: ""

Allah responded to Nuh, peace be upon him, making it clear: " work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant.]" A person's true family, in the sight of Allah, is defined by their righteousness, not by blood alone.

Nuh, peace be upon him, immediately understood his error and humbly prayed: ""

The Waters Recede

The mighty deluge continued until Allah commanded: ".]" And just as swiftly as it began, the water subsided. The sky cleared. The earth drank its fill. The mission was accomplished. The ark, a sturdy vessel of planks and nails, came to rest on the and a warning for generations to come. They were then put into the Fire, finding no helpers besides Allah.

Nuh, peace be upon him, and those with him disembarked in peace and blessings from Allah, upon them and upon the nations that would descend from them. Allah ensured that Nuh's descendants became ], carrying on his legacy. This story became a conscious ear would be conscious of it].

This powerful story reminds us that true family is bound by faith and righteous deeds, and that obedience to Allah brings salvation, while arrogance and disbelief lead to ruin.
