Wrongdoing / Injustice

In Islamic tradition, *ẓulm* (ظُلْم) is a profound concept encompassing all forms of wrongdoing, injustice, and oppression. It’s not merely about harming others, but also includes transgressing against divine laws, disbelieving in God's signs, and even inflicting harm upon oneself. This comprehensive understanding highlights its immense spiritual and ethical weight within a Muslim's life. The Quran repeatedly warns against *ẓulm*, emphasizing that [Allah does not guide those who disbelieve and commit wrong]. It can manifest as outward oppression, such as [preventing the mention of Allah's name in mosques or striving for their destruction], which incurs severe consequences. Crucially, *ẓulm* also includes acts of self-inflicted injustice, like [those whom the angels take in death while wronging themselves] by failing to fulfill their religious duties or abandoning a righteous path. Ultimately, deviating from justice in any form displeases Allah and leads to a loss of true guidance, making the avoidance of *ẓulm* a cornerstone of righteous living and a path to spiritual well-being.

Quran 20 verses

Wa man azlamu mimmam-mana'a masaajidal laahi ai-yuzkara feehas muhoo wa sa'aa fee kharaabihaaa; ulaaa'ika maa kaana lahum ai yadkhuloohaaa illaa khaaa''feen; lahum fiddunyaa khizyunw wa lahum fil aakhirati 'azaabun 'azeem

And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allah from being mentioned in His mosques and strive toward their destruction. It is not for them to enter them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace, and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment.

Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." The angels will say, "Was not the earth of Allah spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.

O Prophet, when you [Muslims] divorce women, divorce them for [the commencement of] their waiting period and keep count of the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. Do not turn them out of their [husbands'] houses, nor should they [themselves] leave [during that period] unless they are committing a clear immorality. And those are the limits [set by] Allah. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself. You know not; perhaps Allah will bring about after that a [different] matter.
