Betrayal

خِيَانَة

Betrayal, known as *khayānah* in Arabic, signifies a profound breach of trust, a breaking of pledges, covenants, or treaties. In Islamic tradition, this concept carries immense weight, extending beyond personal relationships to encompass one's duty to God and community. It is a grave transgression because it undermines the very fabric of sincere faith and human interaction. The Quran sternly warns believers, "O you who have believed, [do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]]." This verse underscores that *khayānah* is not merely a social misstep but a spiritual failing, a direct affront to divine commandments. The consequences for such actions are depicted as severe. Those who [exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price] are promised no share in the Hereafter and a painful punishment. Islam also addresses betrayal in the context of agreements between peoples, emphasizing the importance of upholding treaties and warning against those who repeatedly break their pledges. The Quran declares that [Allah does not like traitors], highlighting the divine disapproval of such deceitful conduct. Upholding trust and remaining loyal are thus fundamental virtues in Islam, reflecting a deep commitment to integrity and justice in all aspects of life.

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَشْتَرُونَ بِعَهْدِ ٱللَّهِ وَأَيْمَٰنِهِمْ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ لَا خَلَٰقَ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَلَا يُكَلِّمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَلَا يَنظُرُ إِلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ وَلَا يُزَكِّيهِمْ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Innal lazeena yashtaroona bi'ahdil laahi wa aymaanihim samanan qaleelan ulaaa'ika laa khalaaqa lahum fil Aakhirati wa laa yukallimuhumul laahu wa laa yanzuru ilaihim Yawmal Qiyaamati wa laa yuzakkeehim wa lahum 'azabun 'aleem

Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allah and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.

فَلَمَّا كَشَفْنَا عَنْهُمُ ٱلرِّجْزَ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ هُم بَٰلِغُوهُ إِذَا هُمْ يَنكُثُونَ

Falammaa kashafnaa 'anhumur rijza ilaaa ajalin hum baalighoohu izaa hum yankusoon

But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach, then at once they broke their word.

ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتَّ مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَهُمْ فِى كُلِّ مَرَّةٍ وَهُمْ لَا يَتَّقُونَ

Allazeena'aahatta min hum summa yanqudoona 'ahdahum fee kulli marratinw wa hum laa yattaqoon

The ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allah.

Wa immaa takhaafana min qawmin khiyaanatan fambiz ilaihim 'alaa sawaaa'; innal laaha laayuhibbul khaaa'ineen

If you [have reason to] fear from a people betrayal, throw [their treaty] back to them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like traitors.

اور اگر تم کو کسی قوم سے دغا بازی کا خوف ہو تو (ان کا عہد) انہیں کی طرف پھینک دو (اور) برابر (کا جواب دو) کچھ شک نہیں کہ خدا دغابازوں کو دوست نہیں رکھتا

But if they intend to betray you - then they have already betrayed Allah before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.

How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.

Kill Joseph or cast him out to [another] land; the countenance of your father will [then] be only for you, and you will be after that a righteous people."

Alam tara ilal lazeena naafaqoo yaqooloona li ikhwaanihimul lazeena kafaroo min ahlil kitaabi la'in ukhrijtum lanakhrujanna ma'akum wa laa nutee'u feekum ahadan abadanw-wa in qootiltum lanansuran nakum wallaahu yashhadu innahum lakaaziboon

Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allah testifies that they are liars.

Allah presents an example of those who disbelieved: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants but betrayed them, so those prophets did not avail them from Allah at all, and it was said, "Enter the Fire with those who enter."

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ‏.‏وَعَنْ ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ لِكُلِّ غَادِرٍ لِوَاءٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ـ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَا يُنْصَبُ وَقَالَ الآخَرُ ـ يُرَى يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ يُعْرَفُ بِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Anas:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, ''Every betrayer will have a flag on the Day of Resurrection" One of the two subnarrators said that the flag would be fixed, and the other said that it would be shown on the Day of Resurrection, so that the betrayer might be recognized by it

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لِكُلِّ غَادِرٍ لِوَاءٌ يُنْصَبُ لِغَدْرَتِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Every betrayer will have a flag which will be fixed on the Day of Resurrection, and the flag's prominence will be made in order to show the betrayal he committed

ہم سے سلیمان بن حرب نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے حماد نے بیان کیا، ان سے ایوب نے، ان سے نافع نے اور ان سے عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے بیان کیا کہ میں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”ہر دغا باز کے لیے قیامت کے دن ایک جھنڈا ہو گا جو اس کی دغا بازی کی علامت کے طور پر ( اس کے پیچھے ) گاڑ دیا جائے گا۔“

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ الْغَادِرُ يُرْفَعُ لَهُ لِوَاءٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، يُقَالُ هَذِهِ غَدْرَةُ فُلاَنِ بْنِ فُلاَنٍ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Umar:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "For every betrayer (perfidious person), a flag will be raised on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be announced (publicly) 'This is the betrayal (perfidy) of so-and-so, the son of so-and-so

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِنَّ الْغَادِرَ يُنْصَبُ لَهُ لِوَاءٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ، فَيُقَالُ هَذِهِ غَدْرَةُ فُلاَنِ بْنِ فُلاَنٍ ‏"‏‏.‏

Narrated Ibn `Umar:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "A flag will be fixed on the Day of Resurrection for every betrayer, and it will be announced (publicly in front of everybody), 'This is the betrayal (perfidy) so-and-so, the son of so-and-so

ہم سے عبداللہ بن مسلمہ قعنبی نے بیان کیا، ان سے امام مالک نے، ان سے عبداللہ بن دینار نے اور ان سے ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ”عہد توڑنے والے کے لیے قیامت میں ایک جھنڈا اٹھایا جائے گا اور پکارا جائے گا کہ یہ فلاں بن فلاں کی دغا بازی کا نشان ہے۔“
