Yunus b. Matta

Yunus b. Matta, known in the Western tradition as Jonah, is a profoundly revered prophet in Islam. His compelling story, beautifully recounted in the Quran, offers timeless lessons in patience, divine mercy, and the power of sincere repentance. He was sent to guide his people, but overwhelmed by their resistance, he departed without Allah's explicit permission, leading to a profound trial. He was subsequently swallowed by a [large fish], enduring a period of intense darkness and reflection. It was within this desperate state that [he cried out to Allah] in heartfelt remorse, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, [responded to his prayer] and saved him. Upon his miraculous return, he found that his entire community had repented in his absence, and [they all believed]. His narrative serves as a powerful reminder of trusting in Allah's plan and the boundless compassion awaiting those who turn to Him. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) famously taught humility by stating, "No one should say that I am better than Yunus ibn Matta," underscoring the equal reverence and respect due to all of Allah's prophets.
Hadith 2 traditions
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، قَالُوا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، - حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ حُمَيْدَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَنَّهُ " قَالَ - يَعْنِي اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - لاَ يَنْبَغِي لِعَبْدٍ لِي - وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى لِعَبْدِي - أَنْ يَقُولَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ مَتَّى عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ " . قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ .
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may prace be upon him) as saying that Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, said:It is not meet for a servant of Mine that he should say: I am better than Yunus b. Matta (peace be upon him)
ابو بکر بن ابی شیبہ محمد بن مثنیٰ اور محمد بن بشار نے کہا : ہمیں محمد بن جعفر نے حدیث بیان کی کہا : ہمیں شعبہ نے سعد بن ابرا ہیم سے روایت کی ، انھوں نے کہا : میں نے حمید بن عبد الرحمٰن کو حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے حدیث بیان کرتے ہو ئے سنا ، انھوں نے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے روایت کی کہ " اس نے فر ما یا : ۔ یعنی اللہ تبارک وتعا لیٰ نے ۔ ۔ ۔ کسی بندے کو جو میرا ہے ۔ ۔ ۔ ابن مثنیٰ نے کہا : میرے کسی بندے کو ۔ ۔ ۔ نہیں چا ہیے کہ وہ کہے : میں یو نس بن متیٰ علیہ السلام سے بہتر ہوں ۔ " ابن ابی شیبہ نے کہا : محمد بن جعفر نے شعبہ سے روایت کی ۔
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَابْنُ، بَشَّارٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ، بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْعَالِيَةِ، يَقُولُ حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عَمِّ، نَبِيِّكُمْ صلى الله عليه وسلم - يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ - عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ " مَا يَنْبَغِي لِعَبْدٍ أَنْ يَقُولَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ مَتَّى " . وَنَسَبَهُ إِلَى أَبِيهِ .
Abu al-Aliya said:The son of the uncle of your Prophet (ﷺ), i. e. Ibn Abbas, reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: It is not meet for a servant that he should say: I am better than Yunus b. Matta (and this Matta) is the name of his father
قتادہ سے روایت ہے کہا : میں نے ابو العالیہ سے سنا ، وہ کہہ رہے تھے : تمھارے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے چچا کے بیٹے ( حضرت ابن عباس رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ) نے مجھے نبی صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے حدیث بیان کی ، کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرما یا : " کسی بندے کو زیب نہیں دیتا کہ وہ کہے : میں یو نس بن متیٰ علیہ السلام سے افضل ہوں ۔ " آپ نے ان کے والد کی نسبت سے ان کا نام لیا ۔
