People of Understanding

أولي الألباب

The "People of Understanding" (أولي الألباب) are individuals endowed with profound intellect, keen insight, and discerning hearts, who actively use their minds to reflect upon Allah's signs and commands. They are not simply intelligent, but possess a wisdom that allows them to grasp deeper truths and derive lessons from both the natural world and divine revelation. The Quran frequently addresses and praises these individuals, inviting them to ponder and reflect. For the People of Understanding, [in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs], revealing the Creator's power and wisdom. Their deep insight also enables them to approach the Quran with the right perspective, for [no one will be reminded except those of understanding], who grasp its profound messages and avoid misinterpretation. They are continuously called upon to [fear Allah], understanding that true success lies in discerning good from evil and adhering to piety. Their wisdom extends to practical matters, recognizing, for instance, that [in legal retribution [saving of] life] lies profound wisdom for society. Through their reflective nature, the People of Understanding embody a cherished ideal in Islam: using one's intellect to grow closer to God and live a life of purpose and discernment.

Quran 17 verses

And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: From the brief introduction to the nature of righteousness appearing in verses before this, the text now enters into the description of related subsidiary injunctions. It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Moving from the affirmation of the principle of Allah's Oneness, the text now answers some doubts raised against it. Do you not see that Allah sends down rain from the sky and makes it flow as springs [and rivers] in the earth; then He produces thereby crops of varying colors; then they dry and you see them turned yellow; then He makes them [scattered] debris. Indeed in that is a reminder for those of understanding.

So, Allah sends down water from the sky, and it settles in the earth, then He causes it to flo...

Abdullah b. `Abbas reported:He spent (one night) in the house of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He (the Holy Prophet) got up, brushed his teeth and performed ablution and said: "In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, there are indeed signs for people of understanding" (al-Qur'an, iii. 190), to the end of the Surah. He then stood up and prayed two rak`ahs, standing, bowing and prostrating himself at length in them. Then he finished, went to sleep and snored. He did that three times, six rak`ahs altogether, each time cleaning his teeth, performing ablution, and reciting these verses. Then he observed three rak`ahs of Witr. The Mu'adhdhin then pronounced the Adhan and he went out for prayer and was saying: "O Allah! place light in my heart, light in my tongue, place light in my hearing, place light in my eyesight, place light behind me, and light in front of me, and place light above me, and light below me. O Allah! grant me light
