Slaughter of the Cow

The Slaughter of the Cow (Dhabh al-Baqarah) recounts a profound event in the history of the Children of Israel, as narrated in the Quran, particularly giving its name to the second and longest chapter, Surah Al-Baqarah. This story begins when [Moses conveyed Allah's command to his people to slaughter a cow]. Rather than immediate obedience, they responded with skepticism, even accusing Moses of ridicule. Their persistent questioning led to a series of increasingly specific descriptions about the required animal, such as its vibrant [yellow color, bright and pleasing to observers], and that it should be [neither trained to plow nor to irrigate the field, free from fault]. Each detail was revealed only after further inquiry, delaying their compliance. Eventually, they found the specific cow and slaughtered it, though the Quran notes they did so with great difficulty. This narrative serves as a powerful reminder in Islamic tradition about the importance of swift and unquestioning obedience to Allah's commands, the pitfalls of excessive inquiry, and how hesitancy can complicate what was initially a simple directive. It underscores the virtue of submission and trust in divine wisdom.

Quran 6 verses

Wa iz qaala Moosaa liqawmiheee innal laaha yaamurukum an tazbahoo baqaratan qaalooo atattakhizunna huzuwan qaala a'oozu billaahi an akoona minal jaahileen

And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allah commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant."
