The Sabbath Breakers

The story of the Sabbath Breakers (أَصْحَاب السَّبْت) is a profound cautionary tale in the Quran, recounting the fate of a community who dwelled by the sea. These were people who were commanded to observe the Sabbath (Saturday) as a day of rest, refraining from worldly work, particularly fishing. However, they devised cunning stratagems to circumvent this divine law, as their fish would appear abundantly only on the Sabbath, disappearing on other days [7:163]. Despite warnings, they continued their transgression, choosing to prioritize their worldly gain over obedience to God's command. As a consequence of their deliberate disobedience and mockery of His injunctions, Allah's decree came upon them. They were transformed into [apes, despised]. This powerful narrative serves as a timeless reminder of the sanctity of divine laws and the severe repercussions of intentional transgression. It highlights the importance of sincere adherence to God's commands and stands as a warning against deception and rebellion, echoing in warnings to future generations [4:47].

Quran 1 verse

yaaa aiyuha lazeena ootu Kitaaba aaminoo bimaa nazzalnaa musadiqallimaa ma'akum min qabli an natmisa wujoohan fanaruddahaa 'alaaa adbaarihaaa aw nal'anahum kamaa la'annaaa Ashaabas Sabt; wa kaana amrul laahi maf'oolaa

O you who were given the Scripture, believe in what We have sent down [to Muhammad], confirming that which is with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them toward their backs or curse them as We cursed the sabbath-breakers. And ever is the decree of Allah accomplished.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: Commentary Note 1: The Qur’ anic expression: فَنَرُ‌دَّهَا عَلَىٰ أَدْبَارِ‌هَا (and turn them shaped like their backs) admits of two probabilities in this act of turning. It could either be that the features of the face are eliminated and the whole face is turned around towards the back; or, it may...
Tafsir al-Jalalayn: O you who have been given the Scripture believe in what We have revealed of the Qur’ān confirming what is with you of the Torah before We obliterate faces erasing the eyes noses and eyebrows in them and turn them inside out and make them like the napes of the neck a flat plate or curse them by trans...
