Sun and Moon

الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَر

The Sun and Moon, shimmering across our skies, hold a profound place in Islamic thought, serving as magnificent [signs of Allah's power and wisdom]. Far from being objects of worship, they are seen as celestial marvels, meticulously [subjected by His command]. Allah, in His boundless wisdom, created the sun as a [shining light and the moon as a derived light], carefully [determining for it phases so that we may know the number of years and account of time]. This divine precision allows humanity to measure days, months, and years, anchoring our lives and worship to a divinely ordained rhythm. They are not just timekeepers; they are continuous reminders of the Creator. As Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) realized, observing their rise and set, these glorious bodies are themselves [created and subject to change], pointing beyond themselves to the Ever-Living, Sustaining Lord. Their consistent, precise movement, from the cleaving of daybreak to the setting of night, is a testament to the [determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing], inspiring reflection and gratitude for the perfect order of creation.

Quran 29 verses

فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلْقَمَرَ بَازِغًا قَالَ هَٰذَا رَبِّى فَلَمَّآ أَفَلَ قَالَ لَئِن لَّمْ يَهْدِنِى رَبِّى لَأَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Falammmaa ra al qamara baazighan qaala haazaa Rabbee falammmmaaa afala qaala la'il lam yahdinee Rabbee la akoonanna minal qawmid daaalleen

And when he saw the moon rising, he said, "This is my lord." But when it set, he said, "Unless my Lord guides me, I will surely be among the people gone astray."

پھر جب چاند کو دیکھا کہ چمک رہا ہے تو کہنے لگے یہ میرا پروردگار ہے۔ لیکن جب وہ بھی چھپ گیا تو بول اٹھے کہ میرا پروردگار مجھے سیدھا رستہ نہیں دکھائے گا تو میں ان لوگوں میں ہوجاؤں گا جو بھٹک رہے ہیں

پھر جب سورج کو دیکھا کہ جگمگا رہا ہے تو کہنے لگے میرا پروردگار یہ ہے یہ سب سے بڑا ہے۔ مگر جب وہ بھی غروب ہوگیا تو کہنے لگے لوگو! جن چیزوں کو تم (خدا کا) شریک بناتے ہو میں ان سے بیزار ہوں

Faaliqul isbaahi wa ja'alal laila sakananw washh shamsa walqamara husbaanaa; zaalika taqdeerul 'Azeezil 'Aleem

[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.

وہی (رات کے اندھیرے سے) صبح کی روشنی پھاڑ نکالتا ہے اور اسی نے رات کو (موجب) آرام (ٹھہرایا) اور سورج اور چاند کو (ذرائع) شمار بنایا ہے۔ یہ خدا کے (مقرر کئے ہوئے) اندازے ہیں جو غالب (اور) علم والا ہے

Inna Rabbakkumul laahul lazee khalaqas sammaawaati wal arda fee sittati qiyaamin summmas tawaa 'alal 'arshi yughshil lailan nahaara yatlu buhoo haseesanw washshamsa walqamara wannujooma musakhkharaatim bi amrih; alaa lahul khalqu wal-amr; tabaarakal laahu Rabbul 'aalameen

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.

کچھ شک نہیں کہ تمہارا پروردگار خدا ہی ہے جس نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو چھ دن میں پیدا کیا پھر عرش پر جا ٹھہرا۔ وہی رات کو دن کا لباس پہناتا ہے کہ وہ اس کے پیچھے دوڑتا چلا آتا ہے۔ اور اسی نے سورج اور چاند ستاروں کو پیدا کیا سب اس کے حکم کے مطابق کام میں لگے ہوئے ہیں۔ دیکھو سب مخلوق بھی اسی کی ہے اور حکم بھی (اسی کا ہے) ۔ یہ خدا رب العالمین بڑی برکت والا ہے

It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know

It is Allah who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.

خدا وہی تو ہے جس نے ستونوں کے بغیر آسمان جیسا کہ تم دیکھتے ہو (اتنے) اونچے بنائے۔ پھر عرش پر جا ٹھہرا اور سورج اور چاند کو کام میں لگا دیا۔ ہر ایک ایک میعاد معین تک گردش کر رہا ہے۔ وہی (دنیا کے) کاموں کا انتظام کرتا ہے (اس طرح) وہ اپنی آیتیں کھول کھول کر بیان کرتا ہے کہ تم اپنے پروردگار کے روبرو جانے کا یقین کرو

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ دَآئِبَيْنِ وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ

Wa sakhkhara lakumush shamsa walqamara daaa'ibaini wa sakhkhara lakumul laila wannahaar

And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.

اور سورج اور چاند کو تمہارے لیے کام میں لگا دیا کہ دونوں (دن رات) ایک دستور پر چل رہے ہیں۔ اور رات اور دن کو بھی تمہاری خاطر کام میں لگا دیا

Alam tara annal laaha yasjudu lahoo man fis samaawaati wa man fil ardi wash shamsu walqamaru wan nu joomu wal jibaalu wash shajaru wad dawaaabbu wa kaseerum minan naasi wa kaseerun haqqa 'alaihil 'azaab; wa mai yuhinil laahu famaa lahoo mim mukrim; innallaaha yaf'alu maa yashaaa

Do you not see that to Allah prostrates whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the moving creatures and many of the people? But upon many the punishment has been justified. And he whom Allah humiliates - for him there is no bestower of honor. Indeed, Allah does what He wills.

کیا تم نے نہیں دیکھا کہ جو (مخلوق) آسمانوں میں ہے اور جو زمین میں ہے اور سورج اور چاند ستارے اور پہاڑ اور درخت اور چار پائے اور بہت سے انسان خدا کو سجدہ کرتے ہیں۔ اور بہت سے ایسے ہیں جن پر عذاب ثابت ہوچکا ہے۔ اور جس شخص کو خدا ذلیل کرے اس کو عزت دینے والا نہیں۔ بےشک خدا جو چاہتا ہے کرتا ہے

Everything prostrates to His might, willingly or unwillingly, and everything prostrates in a manner that befits its nature, as Allah says: أَوَ لَمْيَرَوْاْ إِلَىخَلَقَ اللَّهُ مِن شَى...

أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَيْفَ مَدَّ ٱلظِّلَّ وَلَوْ شَآءَ لَجَعَلَهُۥ سَاكِنًا ثُمَّ جَعَلْنَا ٱلشَّمْسَ عَلَيْهِ دَلِيلًا

Alam tara ilaa Rabbika kaifa maddaz zilla wa law shaaa'a laja'alahoo saakinan summa ja'alnash shamsa 'alaihe daleelaa

Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.

He causes the night to enter the day, and He causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon - each running [its course] for a specified term. That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed.

He created the heavens and earth in truth. He wraps the night over the day and wraps the day over the night and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. Unquestionably, He is the Exalted in Might, the Perpetual Forgiver.

And of His signs are the night and day and the sun and moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or to the moon, but prostate to Allah, who created them, if it should be Him that you worship.
