آيَات
In Islam, the concept of *Ayat* (آيَات) encompasses far more than just "miracles" in the conventional sense; it refers to profound "signs" – remarkable evidences of Allah's existence, power, and truth. These signs manifest in two primary ways: through the extraordinary acts performed by prophets, and through the wonders embedded within creation itself. Prophetic miracles served as undeniable proofs of their divine mission, given by Allah to affirm the authenticity of His messengers. For instance, Allah sent [Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority] to Pharaoh. Similarly, [We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign], demonstrating His unique power in their extraordinary lives. While some people, like those who demanded, ["We will not believe you until you break open for us from the ground a spring"], sought physical wonders, the Quran also invites reflection upon the countless *ayat* woven into the fabric of the universe – from the intricate design of a human being to the vastness of the cosmos. These signs collectively serve to awaken hearts, strengthen faith, and guide humanity towards recognizing the Creator's omnipotence and wisdom.
Quran 3 verses
وَقَالُوا۟ لَن نُّؤْمِنَ لَكَ حَتَّىٰ تَفْجُرَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ يَنۢبُوعًا
Wa qaaloo lan nu'mina laka hattaa tafjura lanaa minal ardi yamboo'aa
And they say, "We will not believe you until you break open for us from the ground a spring.
اور کہنے لگے کہ ہم تم پر ایمان نہیں لائیں گے جب تک کہ (عجیب وغریب باتیں نہ دکھاؤ یعنی یا تو) ہمارے لئے زمین سے چشمہ جاری کردو
Commentary
ثُمَّ أَرْسَلْنَا مُوسَىٰ وَأَخَاهُ هَٰرُونَ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا وَسُلْطَٰنٍ مُّبِينٍ
Summa arsalnaa Moosaa wa akhaahu Haaroona bi Aayaatinaa wa sultaanim mubeen
Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron with Our signs and a clear authority
پھر ہم نے موسیٰ اور ان کے بھائی ہارون کو اپنی نشانیاں اور دلیل ظاہر دے کر بھیجا
Commentary
وَجَعَلْنَا ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَأُمَّهُۥٓ ءَايَةً وَءَاوَيْنَٰهُمَآ إِلَىٰ رَبْوَةٍ ذَاتِ قَرَارٍ وَمَعِينٍ
Wa ja'alnab na Maryama wa ummahooo aayatannw wa aawainaahumaaa ilaa rabwatin zaati qaraarinw wa ma'een
And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign and sheltered them within a high ground having level [areas] and flowing water.
اور ہم نے مریم کے بیٹے (عیسیٰ) اور ان کی ماں کو (اپنی) نشانی بنایا تھا اور ان کو ایک اونچی جگہ پر جو رہنے کے لائق تھی اور جہاں (نتھرا ہوا) پانی جاری تھا، پناہ دی تھی

Hadith 2 traditions
حَدَّثَنَا شِهَابُ بْنُ عَبَّادٍ، حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، عَنْ قَيْسٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا مَسْعُودٍ، يَقُولُ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ مِنَ النَّاسِ، وَلَكِنَّهُمَا آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ، فَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُمَا فَقُومُوا فَصَلُّوا ".
Narrated Abu Mas`ud:The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death of someone from the people but they are two signs amongst the signs of Allah. When you see them stand up and pray
ہم سے شہاب بن عباد نے بیان کیا، انہوں نے کہا کہ ہمیں ابراہیم بن حمید نے خبر دی، انہیں اسماعیل بن ابی خالد نے، انہیں قیس بن ابی حازم نے اور انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نے ابومسعود انصاری رضی اللہ عنہ سے سنا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا سورج اور چاند میں گرہن کسی شخص کی موت سے نہیں لگتا۔ یہ دونوں تو اللہ تعالیٰ کی قدرت کی نشانیاں ہیں۔ اس لیے اسے دیکھتے ہی کھڑے ہو جاؤ اور نماز پڑھو۔
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " إِنَّ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ، لاَ يَنْكَسِفَانِ لِمَوْتِ أَحَدٍ، وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يُخَوِّفُ بِهَا عِبَادَهُ ". وَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَمْ يَذْكُرْ عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ وَشُعْبَةُ وَخَالِدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَحَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ يُونُسَ " يُخَوِّفُ بِهَا عِبَادَهُ ". وَتَابَعَهُ مُوسَى عَنْ مُبَارَكٍ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو بَكْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم. " إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يُخَوِّفُ بِهِمَا عِبَادَهُ ". وَتَابَعَهُ أَشْعَثُ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ.
Narrated Abu Bakra:Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "The sun and the moon are two signs amongst the signs of Allah and they do not eclipse because of the death of someone but Allah frightens His devotees with them
ہم سے قتیبہ بن سعید نے بیان کیا، کہا کہ ہم سے حماد بن زید نے بیان کیا، ان سے یونس بن عبید نے، ان سے امام حسن بصری نے، ان سے ابوبکرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا سورج اور چاند دونوں اللہ تعالیٰ کی نشانیاں ہیں اور کسی کی موت و حیات سے ان میں گرہن نہیں لگتا بلکہ اللہ تعالیٰ اس کے ذریعہ اپنے بندوں کو ڈراتا ہے۔ عبدالوارث، شعبہ، خالد بن عبداللہ اور حماد بن سلمہ ان سب حافظوں نے یونس سے یہ جملہ کہ ”اللہ تعالیٰ ان کو گرہن کر کے اپنے بندوں کو ڈراتا ہے“ بیان نہیں کیا اور یونس کے ساتھ اس حدیث کو موسیٰ نے مبارک بن فضالہ سے، انہوں نے امام حسن بصری سے روایت کیا۔ اس میں یوں ہے کہ ابوبکرہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سن کر مجھ کو خبر دی کہ اللہ تعالیٰ ان کو گرہن کر کے اپنے بندوں کو ڈراتا ہے اور یونس کے ساتھ اس حدیث کو اشعث بن عبداللہ نے بھی امام حسن بصری سے روایت کیا۔
