Mosque of Piety (Masjid al-Taqwa)

مسجد التقوى

The "Mosque Founded on Righteousness" (مسجد التقوى), or Masjid al-Taqwa, is a profound concept in Islam, representing a place of worship built not merely with bricks and mortar, but with pure intentions, sincerity, and profound God-consciousness. The Quran contrasts this noble ideal with the "Mosque of Harm" (Masjid al-Dirar), a structure erected with divisive and malicious intent. Believers are instructed, "[a mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in]." This concept emphasizes that the true value of a mosque lies in the piety and sincere devotion of its builders and congregants. It is a sanctuary where "[men who love to purify themselves]" gather, seeking closeness to Allah and fostering a community based on shared faith and good character. Allah indeed [loves those who purify themselves], indicating the spiritual cleanliness and sincere effort that define such a sacred space. Ultimately, the Masjid al-Taqwa serves as a powerful reminder that all acts of worship and community building must stem from genuine [fear of Allah] and a sincere desire for His pleasure, ensuring they contribute to spiritual growth and unity.

Quran 1 verse

Laa taqum feehi abadaa; lamasjidun ussisa 'alat taqwaa min awwali yawmin ahaqqu an taqooma feeh; feehi rijaaluny yuhibbona ai yatatahharoo, wallaahu yuhibbul mmuttah hireen

Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.

Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Masjid Ad-Dirar and Masjid At-Taqwa The reason behind revealing these honorable Ayat is that before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ migrated to Al-Madinah, there was a man from Al-Khazraj called "Abu `Amir Ar-Rahib (the Monk)." This man embraced Christianity before Islam and read the Scriptures. During the...

Abu Salama b. Abd al-Rabman reported:'Abd al-Rabman b. Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (Allah be pleased with him) happened to pass by me and I said to him. How did you hear your father making mention of the mosque founded on Piety? He said: My father said: I went to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as he was in the house of one of his wives, and said: Messenger of Allah, which of the two mosques is founded on piety? Thereupon he took a handful of pebbles and threw them on the ground and then said: This is the very mosque of yours (mosque at Medina). He (the narrator) said: I bear witness that I heard your father making mention of it
