Clothing of Righteousness

لِبَاس التَّقْوَىٰ

In Islam, the "Clothing of Righteousness" (لِبَاس التَّقْوَىٰ, *libas al-taqwa*) is a beautiful and profound metaphor for an individual’s inner piety, God-consciousness, and moral character. While Allah has generously provided humanity with physical garments for modesty and adornment, the Quran beautifully highlights that [the clothing of righteousness – that is best]. This verse invites believers to look beyond mere external appearances and understand that true beauty and honor lie in one's spiritual state. This inner garment is woven from *taqwa*, a comprehensive term encompassing mindfulness of Allah, a deep awareness of His presence, and a sincere effort to live according to His commands. It means cultivating virtues like honesty, humility, compassion, and justice. Unlike material clothing, which wears out or goes out of fashion, the clothing of righteousness endures, safeguarding the soul and enriching one's life. It is through this spiritual attire that [the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you]. Ultimately, this divine guidance teaches that while physical clothing serves a purpose, the adornment of a pure heart and a righteous character is the most valuable and [indeed, the best provision is righteousness] for this life and the Hereafter.
