Iman (Faith)

Iman, meaning 'faith' or 'belief' in Arabic, is the foundational cornerstone of a Muslim's spiritual life. More than a mere intellectual assent, Iman encompasses a deep, heartfelt conviction in Allah (God) as the One Creator, His angels, His revealed books, His messengers, the inevitable Day of Judgment, and His divine decree. It is a profound trust and surrender that permeates one's being, distinguishing believers from those who dismiss the truth, as the Quran notes about scoffers, [unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not]. This faith is not static; it is tested through life's trials and adversities, often increasing when faced with challenges, as believers declared, [sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs]. True Iman motivates righteous deeds and a life of integrity, ensuring that [they who believe and do not mix their belief with injustice - those will have security, and they are [rightly] guided]. It is the very essence of one's relationship with the Divine, shaping actions, providing solace, and ultimately leading to immense rewards in this life and the Hereafter. The Quran reminds us that [no soul will benefit from its faith as long as it had not believed before or had earned through its faith some good], underscoring the urgency and sincerity required for genuine belief.

Quran 19 verses

Wa izaa qeela lahum aaminoo kamaaa aamanan naasu qaalooo anu'minu kamaaa aamanas sufahaaa'; alaaa innahum humus sufahaaa'u wa laakil laa ya'lamoon

And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: This verse also places before the hypocrites a criterion of true faith (Iman ایمان) آمِنُوا كَمَا آمَنَ النَّاسُ :"Believe as people have believed". Tafsir Ibn Kathir (English): Allah said that if the hypocrites are told, ءَامِنُواْ كَمَآ ءَامَنَ النَّاسُ ("Believe as the people believe,"), meaning, `Believe just as the believers believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, Resurrection after death, Paradise and Hellfire, etc. And obey Allah and His Messenger by...

Those to whom hypocrites said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allah, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."

Commentary

Ma'arif-ul-Quran: In the second verse (173), more praises have been showered on the noble Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, who so courageously stepped forward to join this Jihad. The words of the verse are:

And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allah and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allah. They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allah is swift in account.

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.
