Tafsir al-Jalalayn

15:1Graph

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ الٓر تِلْكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍ

Alif-Laaam-Raa; tilka Aayaatul Kitaabi wa Qur-aa-nim Mubeen

Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an.

آلرا۔ یہ خدا کی کتاب اور قرآن روشن کی آیتیں ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Alif lām rā’ God knows best what He means by these letters. Those — these verses — are the verses of the Book the Qur’ān āyātu’l-kitābi this annexation functions in the sense of min ‘from’ and of a manifest Qur’ān one that makes evident what is truth and what is falsehood wa-qur’ānin mubīnin is made up of a supplement with an added adjectival qualification.

15:2Graph

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَ

Rubamaa yawaddul lazeena kafaroo law kaanoo muslimeen

Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims.

کسی وقت کافر لوگ آرزو کریں گے کہ اے کاش وہ مسلمان ہوتے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

It may be that read rubbamā or rubamā those who disbelieve on the Day of Resurrection when they witness their predicament and that of the Muslims will wish that they had been muslims rubba here is used to indicate ‘many’ since many of them will wish this; but it is also said to indicate ‘few’ since they will be so stupefied by the terrors that they will not come out of their stupor to wish such a thing except on a few occasions

15:3Graph

ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

Zarhum yaakuloo wa tatamatta'oo wa yulhihimul amalu fasawfa ya'lamoon

Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know.

(اے محمد) ان کو اُن کے حال پر رہنے دو کہ کھالیں اور فائدے اُٹھالیں اور (طول) امل ان کو دنیا میں مشغول کئے رہے عنقریب ان کو (اس کا انجام) معلوم ہو جائے گا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Leave them the disbelievers O Muhammad (s) to eat and to enjoy this world of theirs and that they be diverted distracted by hope of a long life and other such matters that keep them away from faith for they will come to know the sequel of their affair — this was revealed before the command to fight them.

15:4Graph

وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌ

Wa maaa ahlaknaa min qaryatin illaa wa lahaa kitaabum ma'loom

And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree.

اور ہم نے کوئی بستی ہلاک نہیں کی۔ مگر اس کا وقت مرقوم ومعین تھا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We did not destroy any town min qaryatin min is extra meaning its inhabitants but that it had a known decree a pre-determined term after which it would be destroyed.

15:5Graph

مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَ

Maa tasbiqu min ummatin ajalahaa wa maa yastaakhiroon

No nation will precede its term, nor will they remain thereafter.

کوئی جماعت اپنی مدت (وفات) سے نہ آگے نکل سکتی ہے نہ پیچھے رہ سکتی ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

No community min ummatin min is extra can outstrip its predetermined term nor can they seek to delay it nor can they put it off.

15:6Graph

وَقَالُوا۟ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ

Wa qaaloo yaaa aiyuhal lazee nuzzila 'alaihiz Zikru innaka lamajnoon

And they say, "O you upon whom the message has been sent down, indeed you are mad.

اور کفار کہتے ہیں کہ اے شخص جس پر نصیحت (کی کتاب) نازل ہوئی ہے تُو تو دیوانہ ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And they that is the disbelievers of Mecca say to the Prophet s ‘O you to whom the Remembrance the Qur’ān — as you claim — has been revealed lo! you are indeed possessed!

15:7Graph

لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

Law maa taateenaa bil malaaa'ikati in kunta minas saadiqeen

Why do you not bring us the angels, if you should be among the truthful?"

اگر تو سچا ہے تو ہمارے پاس فرشتوں کو کیوں نہیں لے آتا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Why do you not bring us the angels if you are of the truthful?’ in saying that you are a prophet and that this Qur’ān is from God.

15:8Graph

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ

Maa nunazzilul malaaa'i kata illaa bilhaqqi wa maa kaanooo izam munzareen

We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved.

(کہہ دو) ہم فرشتوں کو نازل نہیں کیا کرتے مگر حق کے ساتھ اور اس وقت ان کو مہلت نہیں ملتی

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

God exalted be He says The angels do not descend tanazzalu one of the two tā’ letters of tatanazzalu has been omitted save with the truth with the chastisement; and then that is upon the descent of the angels with the chastisement they the disbelievers would not be reprieved would not be granted respite.

15:9Graph

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

Innaa Nahnu nazalnaz Zikra wa Innaa lahoo lahaa fizoon

Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

بےشک یہ (کتاب) نصیحت ہمیں نے اُتاری ہے اور ہم ہی اس کے نگہبان ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Verily it is We nahnu emphasises the subject of inna or functions as a separating pronoun Who have revealed the Remembrance the Qur’ān and assuredly We will preserve it against substitution distortion additions and omissions.

15:10Graph

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Wa laqad arsalnaa min qablika fee shiya'il awwaleen

And We had certainly sent [messengers] before you, [O Muhammad], among the sects of the former peoples.

اور ہم نے تم سے پہلے لوگوں میں بھی پیغمبر بھیجے تھے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily We sent before you messengers to former factions sects.

15:11Graph

وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

Wa maa yaateehim mir Rasoolin illaa kaanoo bihee yastahzi'oon

And no messenger would come to them except that they ridiculed him.

اور اُن کے پاس کوئی پیغمبر نہیں آتا تھا مگر وہ اُس کے ساتھ استہزاء کرتے تھے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And never did a messenger come to them but that they mocked him in the same way that your people have mocked you — this is meant to comfort the Prophet s.

15:12Graph

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

kazaalika naslukuhoo fee quloobil mujrimeen

Thus do We insert denial into the hearts of the criminals.

اسی طرح ہم اس (تکذیب وضلال) کو گنہگاروں کے دلوں میں داخل کر دیتے ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Thus We cause it to find its way in other words in the same way that We have caused denial to enter the hearts of those individuals We cause it to enter into the hearts of the sinners that is the disbelievers of Mecca.

15:13Graph

لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

Laa yu'minoona bihee wa qad khalat sunnatul awwaleen

They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples.

سو وہ اس پر ایمان نہیں لاتے اور پہلوں کی روش بھی یہی رہی ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They do not believe in him in the Prophet s even though the example of the men of old has already gone before that is the way of God in dealing with them those of old by chastising them for denying the truthfulness of their prophets those Meccans are like these former.

15:14Graph

وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَ

Wa law fatahnaa 'alaihim baabam minas samaaa'i fazaloo feehi ya'rujoon

And [even] if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they continued therein to ascend,

اوراگر ہم آسمان کا کوئی دروازہ اُن پر کھول دیں اور وہ اس میں چڑھنے بھی لگیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And even if We were to open for them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending through it the gate

15:15Graph

لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَ

Laqaaloo innamaa sukkirat absaarunaa bal nahnu qawmum mashooroon

They would say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled. Rather, we are a people affected by magic."

تو بھی یہی کہیں کہ ہماری آنکھیں مخمور ہوگئی ہیں بلکہ ہم پر جادو کر دیا گیا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

they would say ‘It is merely that our eyes have been dazzled they have been shut. Nay we are a folk bewitched!’ imagining this.

15:16Graph

وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّٰهَا لِلنَّٰظِرِينَ

Wa laqad ja'alnaa fissamaaa'i buroojanw wa zaiyannaahaa linnaazireen

And We have placed within the heaven great stars and have beautified it for the observers.

اور ہم ہی نے آسمان میں برج بنائے اور دیکھنے والوں کے لیے اُس کو سجا دیا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily We have placed in the heaven constellations twelve of them Aries Taurus Gemini Cancer Leo Virgo al-sunbula Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius and Pisces which are the mansions of the seven orbiting planets Mars rules Aries and Scorpio Venus Taurus and Libra Mercury Gemini and Virgo the Moon Cancer the Sun Leo Jupiter Sagittarius and Pisces and Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius; and We have adorned it with these planets for beholders;

15:17Graph

وَحَفِظْنَٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍ

Wa hafiznaahaa min kulli Shaitaanir rajeem

And We have protected it from every devil expelled [from the mercy of Allah]

اور ہر شیطان راندہٴ درگاہ سے اُسے محفوظ کر دیا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

and We have guarded them with meteors from every outcast devil;

15:18Graph

إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌ

Illaa manis taraqas sam'a fa atba'ahoo shihaabum mubeen

Except one who steals a hearing and is pursued by a clear burning flame.

ہاں اگر کوئی چوری سے سننا چاہے تو چمکتا ہوا انگارہ اس کے پیچھے لپکتا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

except the one who listens by stealth — he is pursued by a clear flame a shining meteor that burns him or pierces him or drives him insane.

15:19Graph

وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍ

Wal arda madadnaahaa wa alqainaa feehaa rawaasiya wa ambatnaa feehaa min kulli shai'im mawzoon

And the earth - We have spread it and cast therein firmly set mountains and caused to grow therein [something] of every well-balanced thing.

اور زمین کو بھی ہم ہی نے پھیلایا اور اس پر پہاڑ (بنا کر) رکھ دیئے اور اس میں ہر ایک سنجیدہ چیز اُگائی

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And the earth We have stretched it out spread it flat and cast therein firm mountains lest it should sway beneath its inhabitants and caused to grow therein every kind of balanced thing every kind of thing known and determined.

15:20Graph

وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَ

Wa ja'alnaa lakum feehaa ma'aayisha wa mal lastum lahoo biraaziqeen

And We have made for you therein means of living and [for] those for whom you are not providers.

اور ہم ہی نے تمہارے لیے اور ان لوگوں کے لیے جن کو تم روزی نہیں دیتے اس میں معاش کے سامان پیدا کئے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We have made for you therein means of livelihood read ma‘āyish such as fruits and grains and We have made this for you those for whom you do not provide such as servants crawling creatures and cattle; it is God Who provides for them.

15:21Graph

وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

Wa im min shai'in illaa 'indanaa khazaaa 'inuhoo wa maa nunazziluhooo illaa biqadarim ma'loom

And there is not a thing but that with Us are its depositories, and We do not send it down except according to a known measure.

اور ہمارے ہاں ہر چیز کے خزانے ہیں اور ہم ان کو بمقدار مناسب اُتارتے رہتے ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And there is not a thing but that the stores thereof the keys to its stores are with Us and We do not send it down except in a known measure according to the benefits of all creatures.

15:22Graph

وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَٰزِنِينَ

Wa arsalnar riyaaha la waaqiha fa anzalnaa minas samaaa'i maaa'an fa asqai naakumoohu wa maaa antum lahoo bikhaazineen

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers.

اور ہم ہی ہوائیں چلاتے ہیں (جو بادلوں کے پانی سے) بھری ہوئی ہوتی ہیں اور ہم ہی آسمان سے مینہ برساتے ہیں اور ہم ہی تم کو اس کا پانی پلاتے ہیں اور تم تو اس کا خرانہ نہیں رکھتے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We send the winds as fertilisers to fertilise the clouds whereupon they fill up with water and send down out of the heaven out of the clouds water rain so that We give it to you to drink for you are not the storers thereof that is the stores thereof are not in your control.

15:23Graph

وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَ

Wa innnaa la nahnu nuhyee wa numeetu wa nahnul waarisoon

And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the Inheritor.

اور ہم ہی حیات بخشتے اور ہم ہی موت دیتے ہیں۔ اور ہم سب کے وارث (مالک) ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Indeed it is We Who give life and bring death and We are the heirs Who shall endure inheriting all creation.

15:24Graph

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَ

Wa la qad 'alimnal mustaqdimeena minkum wa laqad 'alimnal mustaakhireen

And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].

اور جو لوگ تم میں پہلے گزر چکے ہیں ہم کو معلوم ہیں اور جو پیچھے آنے والے ہیں وہ بھی ہم کو معلوم ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily We know the predecessors among you that is those creatures from Adam who have already passed and verily We know the successors those who will come afterwards until the Day of Resurrection.

15:25Graph

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ

Wa inna Rabbaka Huwa yahshuruhum; innahoo Hakeem 'Aleem

And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

اور تمہارا پروردگار (قیامت کے دن) ان سب کو جمع کرے گا وہ بڑا دانا (اور) خبردار ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And it is indeed your Lord Who will gather them lo! He is Wise in His actions Knower of His creatures.

15:26Graph

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

Wa laqad khalaqnal insaana min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud.

اور ہم نے انسان کو کھنکھناتے سڑے ہوئے گارے سے پیدا کیا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily We created man Adam out of a dry clinking clay that gives off a clinking sound when it is tapped of malleable mud black mud.

15:27Graph

وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِ

Waljaaanna khalaqnaahu min qablu min naaris samoom

And the jinn We created before from scorching fire.

اور جنوں کو اس سے بھی پہلے بےدھوئیں کی آگ سے پیدا کیا تھا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And the jānn the father of the jinn namely Iblīs We created beforehand — that is before the creation of Adam — out of the permeative fire a smokeless fire that can escape through openings.

15:28Graph

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

Wa iz qaala Rabbuka lilmalaaa' ikati innee khaaliqum basharam min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud.

اور جب تمہارے پروردگار نے فرشتوں سے فرمایا کہ میں کھنکھناتے سڑے ہوئے گارے سے ایک بشر بنانے والا ہوں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And mention when your Lord said to the angels ‘Indeed I am going to create a mortal out of a dry clay drawn from a malleable mud.

15:29Graph

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَٰجِدِينَ

Fa izaa sawwaituhoo wa nafakhtu feehi mir roohee faqa'oo lahoo saajideen

And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration."

جب اس کو (صورت انسانیہ میں) درست کر لوں اور اس میں اپنی (بےبہا چیز یعنی) روح پھونک دوں تو اس کے آگے سجدے میں گر پڑنا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

So when I have proportioned him completed him and breathed caused to flow of My Spirit in him so that he becomes a living thing — the annexation of ‘the Spirit’ to him is a conferring of honour upon Adam — fall down in prostration before him!’ a prostration meant as an act of salutation by bowing.

15:30Graph

فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَ

Fasajadal malaaa'ikatu kulluhum ajma'oon

So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,

تو فرشتے تو سب کے سب سجدے میں گر پڑے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And so the angels prostrated all of them together kulluhum ajma‘ūn contains two elements of emphasis

15:31Graph

إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

Illaaa ibleesa abaaa ai yakoona ma'as saajideen

Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated.

مگر شیطان کہ اس نے سجدہ کرنے والوں کے ساتھ ہونے سے انکار کر دیا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

except Iblīs the father of the jinn — he was standing among the angels he refused to be among those prostrating.

15:32Graph

قَالَ يَٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

Qaala yaaa Ibleesu maa laka allaa takoona ma'as saajideen

[Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?"

(خدا نے فرمایا) کہ ابلیس! تجھے کیا ہوا کہ تو سجدہ کرنے والوں میں شامل نہ ہوا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He God exalted be He ‘O Iblīs what is wrong with you what prevents you that you are not among those prostrating?’

15:33Graph

قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ

Qaala lam akul li asjuda libasharin khalaqtahoo min salsaalim min hama im masnoon

He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud."

(اس نے) کہا کہ میں ایسا نہیں ہوں کہ انسان کو جس کو تو نے کھنکھناتے سڑے ہوئے گارے سے بنایا ہے سجدہ کروں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Said he ‘I was not about to prostrate myself I should not prostrate myself before a mortal whom You have created out of a dry clay drawn from malleable mud’.

15:34Graph

قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌ

Qaala fakhruj minhaa fa innaka rajeem

[Allah] said, "Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled.

(خدا نے) فرمایا یہاں سے نکل جا۔ تو مردود ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Said He ‘Then be gone from hence that is from the Garden — but it is also said from the heavens — for you are indeed accursed outcast.

15:35Graph

وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

Wa inna 'alikal la'nata ilaa Yawmid Deen

And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."

اور تجھ پر قیامت کے دن تک لعنت (برسے گی)

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And indeed the curse shall rest upon you until the Day of Judgement’ the Day of Requital.

15:36Graph

قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ

Qaala Rabbi fa anzirneee ilaa Yawmi yub'asoon

He said, "My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected."

(اس نے) کہا کہ پروردگار مجھے اس دن تک مہلت دے جب لوگ (مرنے کے بعد) زندہ کئے جائیں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Said he ‘My Lord! Reprieve me until the day when they mankind shall be resurrected’.

15:37Graph

قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَ

Qaala fa innaka minal munzareen

[Allah] said, "So indeed, you are of those reprieved

فرمایا کہ تجھے مہلت دی جاتی ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Said He ‘Then lo! you are of those reprieved

15:38Graph

إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِ

Ilaa Yawmil waqtil ma'loom

Until the Day of the time well-known."

وقت مقرر (یعنی قیامت) کے دن تک

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

until the day of the known time’ the time of the blowing of the First Trumpet.

15:39Graph

قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Qaala Rabbi bimaaa aghwaitanee la uzayyinaana lahum fil ardi wa la ughwiyan nahum ajma'een

[Iblees] said, "My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all

(اس نے) کہا کہ پروردگار جیسا تونے مجھے رستے سے الگ کیا ہے میں بھی زمین میں لوگوں کے لیے (گناہوں) کو آراستہ کر دکھاؤں گا اور سب کو بہکاؤں گا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Said he ‘My Lord because You have lead me astray bi-mā ‘because’ the bi- is for oaths the response for which is what follows I shall adorn for them evil acts acts of disobedience in the earth and I shall lead them astray all of them;

15:40Graph

إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ

Illaa 'ibaadaka minhumul mukhlaseen

Except, among them, Your chosen servants."

ہاں ان میں جو تیرے مخلص بندے ہیں (ان پر قابو چلنا مشکل ہے)

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

except those servants of Yours who are sincerely devoted to You’ namely believers.

15:41Graph

قَالَ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌ

Qaala haaza Siraatun 'alaiya Mustaqeem

[Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight.

(خدا نے) فرمایا کہ مجھ تک (پہنچنے کا) یہی سیدھا رستہ ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He God exalted be He said ‘This is a straight path leading to Me

15:42Graph

إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَ

Inna 'ibaadee laisa laka 'alaihim sultaanun illaa manittaba'aka minal ghaaween

Indeed, My servants - no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.

جو میرے (مخلص) بندے ہیں ان پر تجھے کچھ قدرت نہیں (کہ ان کو گناہ میں ڈال سکے) ہاں بد راہوں میں سے جو تیرے پیچھے چل پڑے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

in other words truly over My servants that is believers you shall have no warrant no power except those who follow you from among the perverse the disbelievers.

15:43Graph

وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Wa inna jahannama lamaw'iduhum ajma'een

And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all.

اور ان سب کے وعدے کی جگہ جہنم ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And truly Hell shall be their tryst all of them that is all those who follow you shall be with you in Hell.

15:44Graph

لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌ

Lahaa sab'atu abwaab; likulli baabim minhum juz'um maqsoom

It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated."

اس کے سات دروازے ہیں۔ ہر ایک دروازے کے لیے ان میں سے جماعتیں تقسیم کردی گئی ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

It has seven gates seven layers — to each gate therein belongs an appointed portion lot of them.

15:45Graph

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍ

Innal muttaqeena fee Jannaatinw wa 'uyoon

Indeed, the righteous will be within gardens and springs.

جو متقی ہیں وہ باغوں اور چشموں میں ہوں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Truly the God-fearing shall be amidst gardens orchards and springs’ flowing through them.

15:46Graph

ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ

Udkhuloohaa bisalaamin aamineen

[Having been told], "Enter it in peace, safe [and secure]."

(ان سے کہا جائے گا کہ) ان میں سلامتی (اور خاطر جمع سے) داخل ہوجاؤ

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And it shall be said to them ‘Enter them in peace that is safe from all danger — or it means enter with the greeting of ‘Peace!’ in other words say ‘Peace’ and then enter secure!’ from all terror.

15:47Graph

وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ

Wa naza'naa ma fee sudoorihim min ghillin ikhwaanan 'alaa sururim mutaqaabileen

And We will remove whatever is in their breasts of resentment, [so they will be] brothers, on thrones facing each other.

اور ان کے دلوں میں جو کدورت ہوگی ان کو ہم نکال کر (صاف کر) دیں گے (گویا) بھائی بھائی تختوں پر ایک دوسرے کے سامنے بیٹھے ہوئے ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We remove whatever rancour spite may be in their breasts. As brethren ikhwānan is a circumstantial qualifier referring to them they shall recline upon couches facing one another mutaqābilīn is also a circumstantial qualifier in other words they do not look upon each other’s backs because the couches revolve with them in them.

15:48Graph

لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ

Laa yamas suhum feehaa nasabunw wa maa hum minhaa bimukhrajeen

No fatigue will touch them therein, nor from it will they [ever] be removed.

نہ ان کو وہاں کوئی تکلیف پہنچے گی اور نہ وہاں سے نکالے جائیں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

No toil no weariness will touch them nor will they be expelled from thence ever.

15:49Graph

نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Nabbi' 'ibaadeee annneee anal Ghafoorur Raheem

[O Muhammad], inform My servants that it is I who am the Forgiving, the Merciful.

(اے پیغمبر) میرے بندوں کو بتادو کہ میں بڑا بخشنے والا (اور) مہربان ہوں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Tell inform O Muhammad (s) My servants that verily I am the Forgiving of believers the Merciful to them

15:50Graph

وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُ

Wa anna 'azaabee uwal 'azaabul aleem

And that it is My punishment which is the painful punishment.

اور یہ کہ میرا عذاب بھی درد دینے والا عذاب ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

and that My chastisement of those who are disobedient is the painful chastisement.

15:51Graph

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Wa nabbi'hum 'an daifi Ibraaheem

And inform them about the guests of Abraham,

اور ان کو ابراہیم کے مہمانوں کا احوال سنادو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And tell them of the guests of Abraham that is the angels — there were twelve ten or three of them among them Gabriel;

15:52Graph

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَ

Iz dakhaloo 'alaihi faqaaloo salaaman qaala innaa minkum wajiloon

When they entered upon him and said, "Peace." [Abraham] said, "Indeed, we are fearful of you."

جب وہ ابراہیم کے پاس آئے تو سلام کہا۔ (انہوں نے) کہا کہ ہمیں تو تم سے ڈر لگتا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

how when they entered unto him and said ‘Peace!’ that is they said this very word salām. He Abraham said after having offered them food which they did not eat ‘Lo! we are afraid of you’.

15:53Graph

قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَٰمٍ عَلِيمٍ

Qaaloo la tawjal innaa nubashshiruka bighulaamin 'aleem

[The angels] said, "Fear not. Indeed, we give you good tidings of a learned boy."

(مہمانوں نے) کہا کہ ڈریئے نہیں ہم آپ کو ایک دانشمند لڑکے کی خوشخبری دیتے ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They said ‘Do not be afraid; lo! we are the messengers of your Lord sent to give you good tidings of a knowledgeable boy’ one very knowledgeable boy namely Isaac — as we mentioned in sūrat Hūd Q. 1169.

15:54Graph

قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَ

Qaala abashshartumoonee 'alaaa am massaniyal kibaru fabima tubashshiroon

He said, "Have you given me good tidings although old age has come upon me? Then of what [wonder] do you inform?"

بولے کہ جب مجھے بڑھاپے نے آ پکڑا تو تم خوشخبری دینے لگے۔ اب کاہے کی خوشخبری دیتے ہو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He said ‘Do you give me good tidings of a boy when old age has befallen me?’ ‘alā an massaniya l-kibaru is a circumstantial qualifier in other words despite the fact of its having befallen me? So of what thing do you give me good tidings?’ an interrogative meant to indicate amazement.

15:55Graph

قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَٰنِطِينَ

Qaaloo bashsharnaaka bilhaqqi falaa takum minal qaaniteen

They said, "We have given you good tidings in truth, so do not be of the despairing."

(انہوں نے) کہا ہم آپ کو سچی خوشخبری دیتے ہیں آپ مایوس نہ ہوئیے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They said ‘We give you good tidings in truth sincerely; so do not be of the despairing’ the despondent.

15:56Graph

قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ

Qaala wa mai yaqnatu mir rahmati Rabbiheee illad daaaloon

He said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except for those astray?"

(ابراہیم نے) کہا کہ خدا کی رحمت سے (میں مایوس کیوں ہونے لگا اس سے) مایوس ہونا گمراہوں کا کام ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He said ‘And who — in other words no one — despairs read yaqnitu or yaqnatu of the mercy of his Lord save those who are astray?’ save disbelievers.

15:57Graph

قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

Qaala famaa khatbukum aiyuhal mursaloon

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

پھر کہنے لگے کہ فرشتو! تمہیں (اور) کیا کام ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He said ‘So what is your business O you who have been sent by God?’

15:58Graph

قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَ

Qaaloo innaaa ursilnaaa ilaa qawmim mujrimeen

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals,

(انہوں نے) کہا کہ ہم ایک گنہگار قوم کی طرف بھیجے گئے ہیں (کہ اس کو عذاب کریں)

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They said ‘We have been sent to a sinning folk a disbelieving folk namely the people of Lot in order to destroy them;

15:59Graph

إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Illaaa Aala Loot; innaa lamunajjoohum ajma'een

Except the family of Lot; indeed, we will save them all

مگر لوط کے گھر والے کہ ان سب کو ہم بچالیں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

all except the family of Lot; indeed we shall save them all of them because of their faith

15:60Graph

إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ

Illam ra atahoo qaddarnaaa innahaa laminal ghaabireen

Except his wife." Allah decreed that she is of those who remain behind.

البتہ ان کی عورت (کہ) اس کے لیے ہم نے ٹھہرا دیا ہے کہ وہ پیچھے رہ جائے گی

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

except his wife — We have decreed that she indeed should be of those who will remain behind’ of those who will stay behind in the chastisement because of her unbelief.

15:61Graph

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

Falamma jaaa'a Aala Lootinil mursaloon

And when the messengers came to the family of Lot,

پھر جب فرشتے لوط کے گھر گئے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And when those who had been sent by God came to the family of Lot that is to Lot himself

15:62Graph

قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَ

Qaala innakum qawmum munkaroon

He said, "Indeed, you are people unknown."

تو لوط نے کہا تم تو ناآشنا سے لوگ ہو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

he said to them ‘Indeed you are strangers’ that is I do not know you.

15:63Graph

قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَ

Qaaloo bal ji'naaka bimaa kaanoo feehi yamtaroon

They said, "But we have come to you with that about which they were disputing,

وہ بولے کہ نہیں بلکہ ہم آپ کے پاس وہ چیز لے کر آئے ہیں جس میں لوگ شک کرتے تھے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They said ‘Rather we have come to you because of that which they your people used to doubt namely the chastisement.

15:64Graph

وَأَتَيْنَٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَٰدِقُونَ

Wa atainaaka bilhaqqi wa innaa lasaadiqoon

And we have come to you with truth, and indeed, we are truthful.

اور ہم آپ کے پاس یقینی بات لے کر آئے ہیں اور ہم سچ کہتے ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And we have brought you the Truth and indeed we speak truthfully in what we say.

15:65Graph

فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ

Fa asri bi ahlika biqit'im minal laili wattabi' adbaarahum wa laa yaltafit minkum ahadunw wamdoo haisu tu'maroon

So set out with your family during a portion of the night and follow behind them and let not anyone among you look back and continue on to where you are commanded."

تو آپ کچھ رات رہے سے اپنے گھر والوں کو لے نکلیں اور خود ان کے پیچھے چلیں اور اور آپ میں سے کوئی شخص مڑ کر نہ دیکھے۔ اور جہاں آپ کو حکم ہو وہاں چلے جایئے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

So travel with your family in a portion of the night and follow their rear walk behind them; and let none of you turn round lest he see the dreadful nature of that punishment which will be sent down on them and go whither you are commanded’ namely to Syria.

15:66Graph

وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَ

Wa qadainaaa ilaihi zaalikal amra anna daabira haaa'ulaaa'i maqtoo'um musbiheen

And We conveyed to him [the decree] of that matter: that those [sinners] would be eliminated by early morning.

اور ہم نے لوط کی طرف وحی بھیجی کہ ان لوگوں کی جڑ صبح ہوتے ہوتے کاٹ دی جائے گی

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We conveyed We revealed to him the matter which was that these sinners was to be eradicated by morning musbihīn is a circumstantial qualifier in other words their annihilation will take place in the morning.

15:67Graph

وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

Wa jaaa'a ahlul madeenati yastabshiroon

And the people of the city came rejoicing.

اور اہل شہر (لوط کے پاس) خوش خوش (دوڑے) آئے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And then came the people of the city the city of Sodom that is the people of Lot upon being told that there were handsome clean-shaven individuals — namely the angels — in the house of Lot rejoicing yastabshirūn is a circumstantial qualifier desiring to commit an abomination with them.

15:68Graph

قَالَ إِنَّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِ

Qaala inna haaa'ulaaa'i daifee falaa tafdahoon

[Lot] said, "Indeed, these are my guests, so do not shame me.

(لوط نے) کہا کہ یہ میرے مہمان ہیں (کہیں ان کے بارے میں) مجھے رسوا نہ کرنا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He Lot said ‘Lo! these are my guests so do not disgrace me;

15:69Graph

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِ

Wattaqul laaha wa laa tukhzoon

And fear Allah and do not disgrace me."

اور خدا سے ڈرو۔ اور میری بےآبروئی نہ کیجو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

and fear God and do not humiliate me’ by seeking them to commit an abomination with them.

15:70Graph

قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Qaalooo awalam nanhaka 'anil 'aalameen

They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?"

وہ بولے کیا ہم نے تم کو سارے جہان (کی حمایت وطرفداری) سے منع نہیں کیا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

They said ‘Have we not forbidden you from entertaining anyone?’ from offering them hospitality?

15:71Graph

قَالَ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَٰعِلِينَ

Qaala haaa'ulaaa'i banaateee in kuntum faa'ileen

[Lot] said, "These are my daughters - if you would be doers [of lawful marriage]."

(انہوں نے) کہا کہ اگر تمہیں کرنا ہی ہے تو یہ میری (قوم کی) لڑکیاں ہیں (ان سے شادی کرلو)

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

He said ‘These here are my daughters if you must be doing’ what you desire to do in the way of satisfying your lust then marry them. God exalted be He says

15:72Graph

لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ

La'amruka innahum lafee sakratihim ya'mahoon

By your life, [O Muhammad], indeed they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly.

(اے محمد) تمہاری جان کی قسم وہ اپنی مستی میں مدہوش (ہو رہے) تھے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

By your life — this is an address to the Prophet s — in their drunkenness they were bewildered hesitant.

15:73Graph

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَ

Fa akhazat humus saihatu mushriqeen

So the shriek seized them at sunrise.

سو ان کو سورج نکلتے نکلتے چنگھاڑ نے آپکڑا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Then the Cry the Cry of Gabriel seized them at sunrise.

15:74Graph

فَجَعَلْنَا عَٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ

Faja'alnaa 'aaliyahaa saafilahaa wa amtamaa 'alaihim hijaaratam min sjijjeel

And We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of hard clay.

اور ہم نے اس شہر کو (الٹ کر) نیچے اوپر کردیا۔ اور ان پر کھنگر کی پتھریاں برسائیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We made their that is their cities’ topmost part their nethermost by Gabriel’s raising them the cities to the heaven and dropping them face down onto the earth and We rained on them stones of baked clay clay baked in fire.

15:75Graph

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَ

Inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil lilmutawassimeen

Indeed in that are signs for those who discern.

بےشک اس (قصے) میں اہل فراست کے لیے نشانی ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Indeed in that which is mentioned there are signs indications of God’s Oneness for those who take note those who observe and take heed.

15:76Graph

وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍ

Wa innahaa labi sabeelim muqeem

And indeed, those cities are [situated] on an established road.

اور وہ (شہر) اب تک سیدھے رستے پر (موجود) ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And indeed they that is the cities of the people of Lot are on a road that still remains Quraysh’s route to Syria one not yet effaced so why do they not take heed from their example?

15:77Graph

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Inna fee zaalika la Aayatal lilmu'mineen

Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

بےشک اس میں ایمان لانے والوں کے لیے نشانی ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

There is indeed a sign a lesson in that for believers.

15:78Graph

وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَٰلِمِينَ

Wa in kaana Ashaabul Aikati lazaalimeen

And the companions of the thicket were [also] wrongdoers.

اور بَن کے رہنے والے (یعنی قوم شعیب کے لوگ) بھی گنہگار تھے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And certainly in has been softened in other words understand it as being innahu the dwellers in the wood a huddle of trees near Midian — these were the people of the prophet Shu‘ayb — were evildoers for denying Shu‘ayb.

15:79Graph

فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍ

Fantaqamnaa minhum wa innahumaa labi imaamim mubeen

So We took retribution from them, and indeed, both [cities] are on a clear highway.

تو ہم نے ان سے بھی بدلہ لیا۔ اور یہ دونوں شہر کھلے رستے پر (موجود) ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

So We exacted retribution from them by destroying them through extreme heat. And certainly both of them that is the cities of the people of Lot and those of the dwellers in the wood are upon a open road plain to see so will you not take heed from their example O people of Mecca?

15:80Graph

وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Wa laqad kazzaba ashaabul Hijril mursaleen

And certainly did the companions of Thamud deny the messengers.

اور (وادی) حجر کے رہنے والوں نے بھی پیغمبروں کی تکذیب کی

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily the dwellers in al-Hijr — a valley between Medina and Syria — namely the tribe of Thamūd denied those who had been sent by God when they denied the prophet Sālih as this constituted a denial of the other messengers since they all shared the fact that they came with the Message proclaiming the Oneness of God.

15:81Graph

وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُمْ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ

Wa aatainaahum Aayaatinaa fakaanoo 'anhaa mu'rideen

And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

ہم نے ان کو اپنی نشانیاں دیں اور وہ ان سے منہ پھرتے رہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And We brought them Our signs by way of the she-camel of Sālih but they were averse to them refusing to reflect on them.

15:82Graph

وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَ

Wa kaanoo yanhitoona minal jibaali buyootan aamineen

And they used to carve from the mountains, houses, feeling secure.

اور وہ پہاڑوں کو تراش تراش کر گھر بناتے تھے (کہ) امن (واطمینان) سے رہیں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And they used to hew out dwellings from the mountains feeling secure.

15:83Graph

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَ

Fa akhazat humus saihatu musbiheen

But the shriek seized them at early morning.

تو چیخ نے ان کو صبح ہوتے ہوتے آپکڑا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

But the Cry seized them in the morning.

15:84Graph

فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ

Famaaa aghnaa 'anhum maa kaanoo yaksiboon

So nothing availed them [from] what they used to earn.

اور جو کام وہ کرتے تھے وہ ان کے کچھ بھی کام نہ آئے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And so that which they used to count as gain in the way of building fortresses and amassing riches did not avail did not protect them from the chastisement.

15:85Graph

وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَ

Wa maa khalaqnas samaawaati wal arda wa maa bainahumaaa illaa bilhaqq; wa innas Saa'ata la aatiyatun fasfahis safhal jameel

And We have not created the heavens and earth and that between them except in truth. And indeed, the Hour is coming; so forgive with gracious forgiveness.

اور ہم نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو اور جو (مخلوقات) ان میں ہے اس کو تدبیر کے ساتھ پیدا کیا ہے۔ اور قیامت تو ضرور آکر رہے گی تو تم (ان لوگوں سے) اچھی طرح سے درگزر کرو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

We did not create the heavens and the earth and all that is between them save with the Truth. And truly the Hour shall come without doubt whereupon every person will be requited according to his deeds. So be forgiving O Muhammad (s) to your people with gracious forgiveness turn away from them without any feeling of anxiety — this was abrogated by the ‘sword’ verse Q. 95.

15:86Graph

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ

Inna Rabbaka Huwal khallaaqul 'aleem

Indeed, your Lord - He is the Knowing Creator.

کچھ شک نہیں کہ تمہارا پروردگار (سب کچھ) پیدا کرنے والا (اور) جاننے والا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Truly your Lord He is the Creator of everything the Knowing of everything.

15:87Graph

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَ

Wa laqad aatainaaka sab'am mnal masaanee wal Qur-aanal 'azeem

And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.

اور ہم نے تم کو سات (آیتیں) جو (نماز میں) دہرا کر پڑھی جاتی ہیں (یعنی سورہٴ الحمد) اور عظمت والا قرآن عطا فرمایا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily We have given you seven of the oft-repeated verses — the Prophet s said that this meant sūrat al-Fātiha as reported by the two Shaykhs Bukhārī and Muslim since it is repeated in every unit of prayer rak‘a — and the great Qur’ān.

15:88Graph

لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

Laa tamuddanna 'ainaika ilaa maa matta 'naa biheee azwaajam minhum wa laa tahzan 'alaihim wakhfid janaahaka lilmu 'mineen

Do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [certain] categories of the disbelievers, and do not grieve over them. And lower your wing to the believers

اور ہم نے کفار کی کئی جماعتوں کو جو (فوائد دنیاوی سے) متمتع کیا ہے تم ان کی طرف (رغبت سے) آنکھ اٹھا کر نہ دیکھنا اور نہ ان کے حال پر تاسف کرنا اور مومنوں سے خاطر اور تواضع سے پیش آنا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Do not extend your glance toward that which We have given different groups of them to enjoy and do not grieve for them should they not believe and lower your wing temper your nature for the believers.

15:89Graph

وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

Wa qul inneee anan nazeerul mubeen

And say, "Indeed, I am the clear warner" -

اور کہہ دو کہ میں تو علانیہ ڈر سنانے والا ہوں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And say ‘Indeed I am the warner of God’s chastisement lest it be sent down on you the clear warner clear in his warning.

15:90Graph

كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَ

Kamaaa anzalnaa 'alal muqtasimeen

Just as We had revealed [scriptures] to the separators

(اور ہم ان کفار پر اسی طرح عذاب نازل کریں گے) جس طرح ان لوگوں پر نازل کیا جنہوں نے تقسیم کردیا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Even as We sent down chastisement on those who make division the Jews and the Christians

15:91Graph

ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَ

Allazeena ja'alul Quraana'ideen

Who have made the Qur'an into portions.

یعنی قرآن کو (کچھ ماننے اور کچھ نہ ماننے سے) ٹکڑے ٹکڑے کر ڈالا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

those who have reduced the Recitation namely those scriptures revealed to them to parts believing in some and disbelieving in others. It is alternatively said that the individuals meant here were those who ‘divided up’ among themselves the roads to Mecca barring people from Islam. Some of them said that the Qur’ān was sorcery some that it was soothsaying and others that it was poetry.

15:92Graph

فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ

Fawa Rabbika lanas'a lannahum ajma'een

So by your Lord, We will surely question them all

تمہارے پروردگار کی قسم ہم ان سے ضرور پرسش کریں گے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

By your Lord We shall question them all — a questioning involving rebuke —

15:93Graph

عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

'Ammaa kaanoo ya'maloon

About what they used to do.

ان کاموں کی جو وہ کرتے رہے

15:94Graph

فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

Fasda' bimaa tu'maru wa a'rid anil mushrikeen

Then declare what you are commanded and turn away from the polytheists.

پس جو حکم تم کو (خدا کی طرف سے) ملا ہے وہ (لوگوں کو) سنا دو اور مشرکوں کا (ذرا) خیال نہ کرو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

So proclaim O Muhammad (s) what you have been commanded to proclaim in other words declare it openly and carry it out and turn away from the idolaters — this was revealed before the command to struggle against the idolaters.

15:95Graph

إِنَّا كَفَيْنَٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَ

Innaa kafainaakal mustahzi'een

Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the mockers

ہم تمہیں ان لوگوں (کے شر) سے بچانے کے لیے جو تم سے استہزاء کرتے ہیں کافی ہیں

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

Indeed We have sufficed you against the mockers who mocked you by Our having destroyed each one of them through some harm and these were al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra al-‘Āsī b. Wā’il ‘Udayy b. Qays al-Aswad b. al-Muttalib and al-Aswad b. ‘Abd Yaghūth

15:96Graph

ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ

Allazeena yaj'aloona ma'al laahi ilaahan aakhar; fasawfa ya'lamoon

Who make [equal] with Allah another deity. But they are going to know.

جو خدا کے ساتھ معبود قرار دیتے ہیں۔ سو عنقریب ان کو (ان باتوں کا انجام) معلوم ہوجائے گا

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

those mockers who set up besides God another god this entire clause is an adjectival qualification; but it is also said to be the subject and because there is an implicit conditional meaning in the above-mentioned clause the particle fā’ has been inserted into the predicate which is the following soon they will know the sequel of their affair.

15:97Graph

وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ

Wa laqad na'lamu annak yadeequ sadruka bimaa yaqooloon

And We already know that your breast is constrained by what they say.

اور ہم جانتے ہیں کہ ان باتوں سے تمہارا دل تنگ ہوتا ہے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

And verily wa-laqad is for confirmation We know that your breast is at times oppressed by what they say in the way of mockery and denial.

15:98Graph

فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّٰجِدِينَ

Fasbbih bihamdi Rabbika wa kum minas saajideen

So exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord and be of those who prostrate [to Him].

تو تم اپنے پروردگار کی تسبیح کہتے اور (اس کی) خوبیاں بیان کرتے رہو اور سجدہ کرنے والوں میں داخل رہو

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

So glorify intimately repeating the praise of your Lord in other words say subhāna’Llāhi wa-bi-hamdihi — and be of those who prostrate themselves those who pray;

15:99Graph

وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ

Wa'bud Rabbaka hattaa yaatiyakal yaqeen

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).

اور اپنے پروردگار کی عبادت کئے جاؤ یہاں تک کہ تمہاری موت (کا وقت) آجائے

Tafsir al-Jalalayn

and worship your Lord until Certainty — Death — comes to you.
