1,234 words6 Quran verses cited35 hadith cited

Long, long ago, in a land rich with fertile plains and flowing rivers, lived a man named Ayyub (Job). He was a Prophet of Allah, blessed with immense wealth, a large, loving family, and deep, unshakeable faith. Allah mentions him among the prophets He revealed to, like Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David, highlighting his esteemed status 4:163, 6:84. Ayyub was known for his piety and generosity. He possessed vast lands, countless livestock, and many children. His life was a picture of prosperity, and he used his blessings to thank Allah and help those in need.

But life, even for prophets, is a test. And Ayyub was about to face one of the greatest tests of patience ever known.

The Winds of Change

Suddenly, the world around Ayyub began to crumble. First, disaster struck his vast wealth. His livestock perished in plagues, his fields were destroyed by storms, and his servants were lost. Then, the greatest sorrow imaginable befell him: he lost his beloved children, one after another, in various calamities. In a short time, the man who had everything now had almost nothing. His once grand home stood quiet, his fields barren, and his hands empty of his children's laughter.

Next, a severe illness afflicted Ayyub. It was a disease that caused him great pain and suffering. According to Ibn Kathir, no part of his body remained healthy except his heart, which continued to beat with faith in Allah. The illness was so severe that most people, even relatives, abandoned him, unable to bear his presence. Some commentators, like Ma'arif-ul-Quran, clarify that prophets do not suffer from repulsive diseases that cause people to be disgusted, but it was certainly a common disease causing great discomfort and pain. For eighteen long years, Prophet Ayyub endured this immense suffering, losing his comfort, his health, and almost all his connections to the world (Anas bin Malik, as recorded by Ibn Jarir).

The Steadfast Wife

Amidst this relentless storm of misfortune, one person remained steadfastly by Ayyub's side: his devoted wife. While others shunned him, she never left. She worked tirelessly, taking paid jobs for people to earn enough to feed and care for her ailing husband. Every morning, every evening, she would return to him, offering comfort, food, and unwavering support. Her loyalty was a beacon in Ayyub's darkest hours, a testament to her deep faith and love.

Even in his immense suffering, Ayyub’s heart remained firmly connected to Allah. His physical pain was great, but the true agony, as he expressed, came from another source. "Indeed, Satan has touched me with hardship and torment," he called to his Lord . Ibn Kathir explains that the "hardship" referred to his bodily afflictions, and "torment" to the loss of his wealth and children. Ma'arif-ul-Quran adds that this "touch" of Shaytan wasn't direct physical control, but perhaps the whispers of doubt, the planting of scruples in his heart or the suggestion of despair through his wife, which caused him mental anguish. Yet, Ayyub never complained about Allah's decree; his plea was a humble submission, acknowledging the source of temptation.

A Cry Answered

One day, after enduring his trials for so long, the time for relief arrived. Allah, the Most Merciful of those who show mercy, responded to His patient servant. A divine command came to Ayyub: "Strike with your foot; this is a a cool bath and drink" , "strike with your foot; this...](38:42).

With faith and obedience, Ayyub struck the ground. Immediately, a cool, refreshing spring of water gushed forth. He washed his body in its pure waters, and as he did, all his external pains and afflictions vanished. Then he drank from it, and all his internal ailments disappeared. Ayyub was completely healed, restored to full health, looking even better than before!

His wife, returning from her work, saw him transformed. She exclaimed, "May Allah bless you! Have you seen Allah's Prophet, the one who is sorely tested? By Allah, I have never seen a man who looks more like him than you, if he were healthy!" Ayyub, with a gentle smile, revealed, "I am he!" (Anas bin Malik, as recorded by Ibn Jarir).

The Oath and the Blessing

Allah's mercy poured down upon Ayyub like rain. "And We granted him his family and a like number with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for those of understanding" with them...](38:43). According to Al-Hasan and Qatadah, Allah brought his deceased family members back to life and granted him even more children, doubling his offspring.

His wealth was also restored beyond measure. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described a miraculous event: "While Ayyub was bathing naked, locusts of gold fell upon him. Ayyub, peace be upon him, began gathering them in his garment. Then his Lord called to him, 'O Ayyub, have I not made you so rich that you have no need of what you see?' He, peace be upon him, said, 'Yes, O Lord! But I cannot do without Your blessing!'" . He had two threshing floors, one for wheat and one for barley. Allah sent two clouds, one raining gold until the wheat floor was full, and the other raining gold until the barley floor was full (Anas bin Malik, as recorded by Ibn Jarir). His prosperity returned, overflowing with blessings.

There was one more matter to resolve. During his illness, Ayyub had become upset with his wife for some reason (perhaps, according to Ma'arif-ul-Quran, when Shaytan tried to trick her into a statement that bordered on shirk, or because she was delayed one day, as mentioned in Ibn Kathir's account of Anas's narration) and had sworn an oath that if he recovered, he would strike her one hundred times. Now, healed and grateful for her immense loyalty, he couldn't bring himself to harm her. Allah, in His infinite mercy, provided a gentle solution: "We said, 'And take in your hand a bunch of grass and strike with it and do not break your oath'" . So, Ayyub took a bundle of one hundred thin blades of grass or twigs and gently struck his wife once, fulfilling his oath without causing her pain. This showed Allah's way out for those who are mindful of Him (Ibn Kathir).

An Excellent Servant

Ayyub's story is a profound lesson in patience and trust in Allah. He endured loss, pain, and isolation for many years, never losing hope or faith. Allah Himself praised him, saying, "Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back to Allah" .

This epic journey of suffering and miraculous recovery stands as a timeless reminder for "those of understanding" with them...](38:43). It teaches us that trials are part of life, even for the most righteous, and that true patience is to turn to Allah in every circumstance, knowing that His mercy is boundless and His help is always near. When we face difficulties, we can remember Prophet Ayyub, and how Allah rewarded his unwavering patience with unimaginable blessings.
